Just as I got into work the check engine light came on. Not a big deal, just brought out the lap top computer, cleared the codes, and went back to work. The same code showed up on the way back home. The code was 0519 - Manifold absolute pressure sensor circuit open/short to ground.

The repair manuel said to look at the baro pressure and MAP sensor with the ignition on, but the motor off. The two should be the same. The MAP sensor was about 150 mbar (2.2 psi) low. A good cleaning brought it up so that it is now about 100 mbar low. Must just be within tolerance because the check engine light no longer turns on.

Given that most cars that a factory turns out are average, a few real dogs, and fewer yet very good. I must have one of the very good ones. The techs at the dealership have commented on how strong it runs compared to the others.

This check engine light has given me the opportunity to snoop a bit. What I have found is that the MAP sensor is low, which makes the boost higher by about 2 psi. The MAF (mass air flow sensor) is reading high, which makes for more fuel. The combination of more boost with more fuel makes more horse power.

Does this sound reasonable?
Now that the MAP sensor is back within tolerance, should it be left alone?

What's the old saying? DONT FIX IT IF IT AINT BROKE?

BTW, what or where did you come up with a computer program/cable to use your lap top for code pulling? Be interested in one for mine.

You can get the software and interface from:
http://www.scantool.net
It is still under development, but seems to do a decent job so far.

Well, just because it is working, does it mean that it is not broaken? The sanity check is to see if things should just be left alone and enjoy the ride, or get things back to factory spec? The right foot says to leave things alone.

More air (extra boost) and more fuel always mean more power. I doubt you're exceeding the design limits by much. If it was mine, I'd leave itbe and enjoy it.

Gee, mind telling us what kind of vehicle

Guys are putting 40 hp fueling boxes and nitrous kits on TDI's without blowing them up, I wouldn't worry too much about a slightly out of tolerance MAP sensor.
