Need a recommendation for a 2.0T FSI

My sister bought a 2007 Audi A4 2.0T FSI from an Audi dealer with 30k miles and now it has 37k. She planned on changing the oil at the dealer at 40k per the factory recommendation, but I volunteered to change it at 5k intervals due to what I have read on this forum regarding FSIs.I have done some research and I see that most of what we know about this oil comes from the thread about 23 used oil analysis, but there are some good oils that are not represented. She is not going to pay $50+ for RLI, Motul, or Redline. We need an oil in the under $30 range, preferably available over the counter in case we run out of makeup oil. I ran across a good UOA for Rotella T6 and I was wondering if anybody knew of other used oil analysis for this oil on the FSI.

Pretty nice even cheap on Amazon which is usually a total rip-off for oil

I plan on using Mobil 1 High Miles. Either the thick 10w30 or 10w-40 for you (her) in that climate.

Rotella is good, but the Mobil 1 High Mileage has a very nice additive package and is cheap....comes in 5q jug too.

fwiw, you can reuse the filter at 5k. Just drain the canister and re-install. Maybe the first short change you want to change he filter too, in case some junk comes out of solution.

btw- tell her that she can use any motor oil for make-up oil in a pinch or near the end of the interval. (15w-40 HD or 10w30 conventional)

This is especially if it's very low (>1q) or if the level light comes on. Make sure she knows how to check the oil and add. A predictive method can be used if she resets the odo and checks it every 500 miles until she determines the consumption rate. Adding 1/2 a q at a time is ideal.


I just went to Castrol EDGE 5w30 in my TSI. I am braver than most owners, plus it's going into deep winter. I will be doing a used oil analysis.

imo, at 5k intervals, don't be too afraid of thin 5w30 and 10w30s, esp if she takes short trips or if you see cold weather. I doubt she heats the oil up very much, or if she observes proper warm-up.


Castrol EDGE is good, follow the parts store sales for it or Ultra.

Chubbs, I knew that Brad Penn UOA would come up. Do you know if there is more than one UOA on that oil? I'm a little iffy on it because of the price after shipping and how it isn't tested for 502 standards and I plan on taking a picture of oil changes for warranty purposes.

Audi Junkie, the first time we needed to make up oil, she told me the light was on. We added a bottle of Syntec. Last weekend the light wasn't on but I checked her oil and it was at the low mark, so I added a bottle of Chevron conventional 10w40. Mobil 1 High Mileage seems like a fine oil, but I'm worried its not substantial enough for a FSI. It is looking like the best option though, since I'm pretty sure Brad Penn and Rotella are not on the 502 list.

She waited for the low oil light to come on before you checked the oil level? You topped off the oil using conventional 10w40 oil in a turbocharge engine?

The FSI engines burns oil like crazy. They have a big problem with valve deposits also.

If you only want to use a 502 oil. Then buy the cheapest stuff, and check the oil level often.

By what I have read so far,probably the smart thing to do would be to let the dealer be responsible for the car.

Sorry didn't mean to sound rude. The situation is just that I didn't realize these engines were so finicky and that dino would not be that big of a deal towards the end of a change. She knows now to check the oil when she refuels. I may even have her take it to the dealer at 10k intervals and then change it myself at 5k inbetween with Syntec.

The 505.1 is a diesel spec. The car specs a 502 oil. By me saying "buy the cheapest oil". I meant buy any 502 spec oil you can find for the lowest price. The car burns oil. The car will burn $5.00 a quart Castrol 5W-40 just the same as $13.00 a quart Motul 5W-40.

I would stick to 5K OCI in this engine. It sounds like it will be easier for her just to go to the dealer every 5K. Just buy a spare quart of Castrol 5W-40 for top off to keep in the car to last the 5K OCI.

That's not accurate. Lots of info. out there.

Also FYI some FSI owners have seen large changes in oil consumption when switching brands.
