A shot of compressed air and a few taps will make it clean as new

I wash the foam pre-filter on mine (Deere LA-175) and pop it back on after a tap and air blast on the paper element. If the foam disintegrates or the paper is permanently charcoal gray and the engine starts to rich stink or buck/ misfire?

She gets a whole intake and plug refresh. No problems yet.

Restriction isn't an issue when air is completely bypassing the filter element altogether!

The best engine filtering system is a good air filter and a good oil filter. It's never been proved that dirtier oil cause less wear than cleaner oil.
