Anyone using Napa oil? Is it just lower cost Valvoline? Are Napa parts ok in general? Im full of questions.

It has been posted here that NAPA oil is indeed Valvoline. I use NAPA Gold air filters and in my van the Gold oil filter. I swear by their brakes.

I suspect the basic dino NAPA may be the same as AllClimate, but I think there may be some differences in the higher level products. For example, I have a load of NAPA synthetic in two of my vehicles right now. It is SL, but not CF rated, whereas the SL Synpower is also CF rated. In that case there seems to be a difference. Right now you can get free Maxlife (see the promotions forum here).

NAPA tends to carry quality products. They also seem to be more expensive, in general, than the other national chains.

You can sometimes get a discount on the Gold filters (Wix) just by asking.

When I asked Valvoline techies about NAPA oil, they said that it was made by Valvoline, but had a less robust additive package. Was he telling the truth, or just trying to sell more Valvoline brand????? Maybe someone should send some samples to Butler for a free VOA. s

I too have questioned Napa oil and have used the 5w30 once or twice. It is made by Ashland Oil Co. but is not the same as All-Climate. I know, the MSDS sheets on the Napa site states this. However, I have emailed Valvoline about this. They advised that the Napa oil is a premium oil but does not have the same additive package. Also I asked for msds sheets on the Napa brand oil and one thing I noticed was there flash was not as high as the All-Climate. Also, upon observation between the Napa and the Valvoline All-Climate 5w30, the All-Climate seemed thicker. For more information you can go to the Valvoline web site and look up product information/msds for the Napa oil under the Ashland name. I'll try to get some of that information and post it.

I have bought lots of parts from NAPA over the years for farm and personal vehicles of various types. They seem to have decent parts for American vehicles. I will never buy another mechanical part for a Nissan vehicle there again. They sold me a water pump for my 240Z that immediately failed. They replaced it free and the replacement failed and chewed up the front cover. They wouldn't do a thing but replace the water pump. I wouldn't take the chance so I went and bought a MUCH more expensive Nissan part. I worked perfectly until I sold the car several years later. They also had garbage fuel pumps for the car.

The air filter they sold us for our Brat didn't fit the airbox right and we trashed the engine from dirt getting by. The Subaru filters we got prior to that fit perfectly. I believe this was before WIX was their supplier.

Never had any troubles with the parts they gave us for our American V8 pickups or diesel trucks, nor any of the WIX-made filters for the pickups, heavy trucks, tractors, or other stuff.

I have use Napa 5w30 oil a few times and wondered if it is the same as Valvoline All-Climate. From what I have found, it is not. I know, I know, the Napa web site msds states that the Napa is Valvoline AC but I contacted Valvoline on this matter. Valvoline stated that the Napa oil is made by Ashland oil company and is a premium oil but does not have the additives the Valvoline has.

I also contacted Valvoline to get the msds on Napa 5w20. I compared the msds numbers to the AC number and they were different. The flash was higher in the AC.

Upon observance of the 5w30 Valvoline AC and the Napa, the AC is thicker than the Napa also.

Last time I was at NAPAOnline.com I looked up motor oil. They do not list much, but the basic NAPA dino is there. When you click the NAPA oil for a MSDS the Valvoline AllClimate MSDS comes up. Not that that makes them the same. Just strange. I didn't know you could get NAPA oils on the Valvoline web site.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm trying to find a new parts store, advance auto has been my go to but their products are just plan cheap. The oil and filters are the same as anywhere but tune-up parts and brakes are crap. I did a tune-up on my friends Jetta with Advance parts. The purolator air filter was the only brand I'd heard of before, everything else was made by GLS or something like that.

Carquest is my favorite parts place, but NAPA seems to carry good quality parts too. The NAPA oil is the same as Valvoline. Comes out of the same bulk tank. I was at a place called "Graham Packaging" in Cincinnati where they make the bottles for Valvoline and I asked the same question when I was there and that's the answer I got. There is no difference between Carquest, NAPA, Marathon-Speedway oil. I forgot all the other store brands Valvoline makes. So save your bucks and get the store brand if you like Valvoline.

TallPaul, I contacted Valvoline by email for the Napa 5w20 msds and they emailed me back and advised that they could not send the data sheet by email but could fax it to me. I gave them my fax number and sure enough they fax it to me within an hour. I took the msds sheet for the Napa and compared it to the msds for the all-climate on the V web site and it was different.

I believe there is a way to look up the Napa Oil on the Valvoline website by going to the all-climate msds. When you click on the msds a page will pop up. Click on the MSDS on top of the page instead of clicking on Valvoline msds. The Ashland oil company will come up and you can do a search. I have do this before but for some reason it is not working for me at this time. Anyway, hope that helps.
