So me and the wife went garage sale-ing this morning in the land of the yuppies. Picked up a few things, among them a two-year old 4.5 hp mower for $20. PO said it had only been used a couple of times before they started a lawn service contract. That was over a year ago and now it wouldn't start. The look of the mower confirmed that it had only been used a very few times. The guy even bought it a brand new sparkplug, which he included. He had recently cleaned and oiled the air cleaner. The oil was still absolutely clear and smelled good the deck looked brand new. There was hardly any gas in the tank, however, and what was there was old. I handed them a $20 and put the mower in the back of my truck.

I got home drained the gas and put in some fresh. It fired right up and I mowed my front lawn with it. It's really got some power. People kill me.

Yes, Not far from me people have $40K-100K vechiles parkedin the drive way because their garages are full of junk that theyw ill never use. So often if you drive by on trash day you can get $1000 ski's, $200 tenis racket's, almost new roto tillers and all kinds of stuff that they are tossing to try and make space. these people toss away stuff that I would pay good money for! In fact it has been a few years since I have made the 40 mile trip.....I should maybe go see what I see. With the current eccconomy though in Michigan they might be holding on to more?

Nice. My neighbor accross the street put his Craftsman out with a 4 sale sign for $15 and it was sold the next day.

You know, that's not a bad idea. I hate the listing processes of selling things online. Might as well just use a piece of cardboard.

Awesome deal for you! A new mower for $20. I would have grabbed it for a spare.

No kidding, I would have picked it up if I had 3 already lol. One man's trash, another man's treasure I guess.

Nice score for the OP

Craigslist, baby-quicker & easier than a yard sale!!

I happen to be at the local Lowes ,they had a $250 Troy-built 6.5-hp Briggs mower that was a return.I looked in the gas tank looked to me like it never had any gas.For $100 I took a chance .Great mower and a lot more powerfull than the 3.5 I'd been using. That was 5 years ago.Goes to show you that every once in while You can be @ the right place at the right time.

Funny you should say that, it actually was my fourth.

I friend of mine got an even better deal. She saw a nearly new mower on the curb ( for bulk pick-up); she asked if she could have it, yes he said, he had gotten a riding mower just that week and didn't need a push mower anymore.(?).
She couldn't get it started. It still had the original plug; the air filter foam was clean and oiled, and the blade was even sharp.
I put some techtron in the tank, added some fresh gas and primed it 4-5 times. It popped the first two/three tries, and ran on the fourth try.
A little rough but with carb cleaner and a new plug it will be fine.

I picked up a John Deere self-propelled with an 8.75 HP Briggs & Stratton engine for $425, it listed at $599 and Lowes had it marked down from $529. It had been slightly used but returned because of a problem with the kill switch (repair receipt was included with paperwork). It is a real pleasure to use, it has both power and maneuverability.

My niece will use it for a long-mowing business next year and pay me back. Now I just need to find out which oil is best.
