Okay, in a month I will be leaving for college. Since I will be going out of state I will have to leave my car at home. During that period it will be driven little since both of my parents have their own cars. I am expecting my sister to be driving it but she still has to get her license. It's an 04 Civic. Before I leave I will be changing the oil and filter. At first I was thinking of dino oil and whatever brand filter I have right now and do and oil change in the winter when I come home. But right now Advance Auto has M1 oil filters on sale for less than $8 so I was thinking of getting a couple and doing a 10k oci with either M1 5w-30 or Penzoil Platinum 5w-30 since the manual says its ok for normal service with dino anyways so I thought a synthetic would be more than adequate. Would Penzoil Platinum be able to handle a 10k oci or should I go with the M1? Also, I am not very familiar with M1 filter numbers so I was wondering if someone could tell me what fits on my Civic. Lastly, would anyone recommend against doing a 10k oci for my situation?

10k OCI is perfectly fine on either of those synths.

Don't worry too much about the filter, for a 10k OCI, even a cheap FRAM or Supertech should be just fine.

well, if you'll be at school and no one's really going to be driving it, wouldn't it take a lot of time to rack up 10k miles?

I'd stay with a good dino oil and a cheap/on sale oil filter. I've been storing a '80 Firebird Formula for 26 years. Talk about not being driven much!(35,000 miles). It only sees dino oil and a Puro Prem Plus. My daughters '88 Honda Accord(340,000+ miles) only sees a good dino oil and always has. It sits 9 monthes out of the year now that she's in collage out of state. It starts and runs just fine and I mean fine!

I'm doing a 10k run of Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 right now in my parents' 04 civic and it loves this oil so far! But then again, I haven't reached 10k yet, though I'm betting it'll be just fine when it finally does. The car does like PP a lot though. I use Puro Prem Plus filters, like Char Baby, for the PP 10k run. I doubt M1 filters are needed. For your situation though, dino would probably be more appropriate. I bet the car will have only a small number of miles on it when you return. But then again, you might want to be on the safe side, with your sister driving soon. It's up to you. If you do go with the synthetic, I highly recommend the PP, based on my initial experience with the oil in my civic.

Hey asiancivicmaniac, once in college your car will be you last worry. Finding the right party spots along with lots of chemical inducements be they legal or illegal will most likely be on your mind. See at this point you have no idea what awaits you but those of us who have been through it know what awaits you. Remember when they said in HS that those are going to be some of your most memorable years? Yeah right wait until fall, have as much fun but don’t forget about education as education will give you more freedom to do what even you want. When my car was sitting idle when in college I had someone drive it at least once a week to make sure all moisture would burn off. This is probably the best advice that I can give because my oil analysis was spectacular even though I put 2k miles per year on the ride.

The trouble is, gents, we don't know this guy's sister's driving habits... (If your sister is younger than you, I think you're setting yourself up for some serious hurt, asiancivicmaniac.)

Get full coverage ASAP if you don't have it already

If you're looking for a good extended drain 5w-20, you should Also consider Valvoline synpower. Back in may it became the only 5w-20 to get acea a5 certified.

A5 - Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use at extended drain intervals in high performance gasoline and car + light van diesel engines designed to be capable of using low friction low viscosity oils with a High temperature / High shear rate viscosity of 2.9 to 3.5 mPa.s. These oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

Its hard for me to believe that Drew, i tried calling Valvoline myself. Unfortunatly, I got transferred to an answering machine. So let me know what they say if they get back to you.

I agree. Oil is the very least of your worries. The chances of your sister doing serious damage to your car are 1000 times higher than any plan in the world you have in mind for your vehicle-including doing exactly nothing.

Don't under any circumastances allow your sis to drive your car until she has been driving for at least a year

On top of that I'll add this, if it's still in your name, you will be legally liable for any and all damages should your sister get into a wreck or some other misfortune. $hit happens.

If it's a fully certified A5/B5-04 5w20, I predict it's going to become very popular here.

Beats the PP 5w20 A5-02 minus the HTHS spec. Amsoil is missing the boat on this one.

Congradulations and best of luck! Do it in the winter upon return. I think if anything the only thing that might need "care" is your battery and that you can do once a month with a battery trickle charger like "Battery Tender"

5w20 that meets the Honda specs are good to go for 10,000 mile OCI's. So synthetics like M1 or PP, etc,. will be just fine!

Listen to Schmoe.
If it's not in your parent's names, DO NOT LET HER DRIVE IT.
If it is in their names, make sure there's comp insurance on it, so you get a new one when your sister totals it.
If you love your sister and have the money, buy her a used police car to total.... I don't like her odds in a Civic.

I'm not all that familiar with the ACEA ratings, could you explain the difference between the different A5 ratings? I had no idea there was different variations like A5-02 and A5-04. I'd hate to push this thread off track, so maybe in the Valvoline thread Drew posted?

Wow. Young female without license yet...

No problem, just know that you'll be looking for a new car when you need one again.

Oh yea, I remember when I tried going to college without a car. Worst decision of my entire life. It freaked me out so bad, that if I ever have less than TWO cars now, I can't sleep at night.
