I was on the phone with my Esso bulk dealer looking for some D1. He said that it is soon to be discontinued and replace solely with D1 ESP (in Canada at least).

Does anybody have any more info or my dealer just misinformed?

Delvac 1 has been gone from the States for years. I suspect he's telling the truth. As soon as D1 ESP came out in 2007, D1 was quickly gone.

No, he's right, it would seem. When I went to the bulk dealer last spring here, they were already out of Delvac 1 and just had ESP, which I bought and used happily anyhow. They, too, told me it was discontinued.

They might be discontinuing D1, but I think they are still making TDT 5W-40, which was similar, and is not an ultra-low SAPS oil - still has a TBN close to 10.

At no point have low-SAPS oils been in this discussion. These [D1 ESP and TDT] are CJ-4 oils. D1 ESP was first to CJ-4, then TDT caught up to CJ-4 a while later.

There are two flavors of Mobil branded ESP oils that are low SAPS, M1 ESP 5w30 and M1 5w40 Formula M.

Clear as mud isn't it?

D1 is my next fill in my 98 Dodge Cummins. I like the specs and long history of reliability for extended drains and exceptional wear protection it has, CJ4 or not...

All the oils come from the same places.

These are synthetic oils at hand though. Do PAO and POE start as plant-matter-oil?

You should know by now how it works here. Mobil 1 and Delvac 1 are Group IV synthetics when and only when someone is looking to criticize Group IV synthetics. Mobil 1 and Delvac 1 are Group III when that suits the purpose of the criticism.

Anybody near Bonnyville, AB, there is still some there my bulk guy shipped his up there. I guess it wasn't selling well in my small town.

In all reality I was looking for a good 0W so that gives me one more choice. I will still give the good old D1 a shot this summer when I start pulling thru the mountains this summer.

What are you basing that on? The D1 had lower iron with higher mileage...Or did I read it wrong?
