muffler sounds raspy

I have been on the hunt for a good sounding exhuast system, I have tried 5 different exhaust mufflers and have never been happy. Stock was too quiet,turbo sounded good at idle but wot got the vacuum sweeper sound.
Went to a flowmaster 40. Liked it alot. Wanted deeper and louder. I got a flow sound 6inch 1 chamber race muffler. Sounded ok but not deep and loud enough.
Cut off cats and had the sensors turned off. Way too loud has raspy sound. Purchased a two chambered 40 flow knock off. Has good sound at idle and at normal speeds. Increase in throttle and raspy sound is back and the drone from 1400 to 2000 rpm in the cab is almost impossible to bear.
Supercharged 5.3,k&n cold air and headers.2004 Chevy Silverado.
Now I know I am going to get a lot of heat for cutting off the cats but I was searching for some sound and got more than I bargined for. I am wondering about a 20inch magnaflow is going to give me any cabin noise.
I cant find any muffler place that can tell me if I am going to get a lot of cabin noise. I would appreciate any feed back on this. I like loud and deep but not the cabin drone.

The downstream sensors are actually catalyst monitors. Those are the ones that would be disabled.

I had a high flow cat on my old supra, ended up with a Dynomax "hemi" super turbo. No drone, pretty quiet at cruise until you got on it, then it got nasty.
 
A speedshop near by has a guy who can reprogram the cars computer to do all most anything to make your car perform better.
I know that its illegal but I am not the only guy in the usa to do this and I know that does not make it right. I am just trying to having a good running truck with the right sound and I hate the cabin noise I am having now and the raspy sound under heavy throttle.
I knew that I would get heat from everybody for removing the cats .
 
meh i took the cats off of my 98 mustang, just ran a offroad X pipe with spintech mufflers. are they turning off the rear's via the PCM or using the splice in resistors?
 
Give each new muffler a couple weeks. Sometimes the bare metal inside sounds awful but they get better once full of soot and carbon.
 
Cats are great mufflers.
You eliminated them for very little gains, with subsequent loss to the environment and everyone's ears.
Resonators will fix you up pretty good, if you want. Get as long and as big as will fit.
 
I have a 3inch center and two 2 and half inch out all the way to the rear. no restrictions. I am wondering if you can run a resinator in front of the muffler and do any good ? I have ordered a new ss thunder bolt muffler that is 20inches long. It is not a chambered muffler.
 
Flowmaster is well know for its drone and lack of deep tone. If you want loud and minimal drone, get Pypes "violator" mufflers.

On a side note, I do no recommend having high db noise inside the car. Hearing problems are very difficult to deal with. I have loud mufflers but I have added sound deadening material to the interior to keep levels within safe limits.
 
Sounds like maybe your exhaust is touching something to give you a drone sound. Be sure nothing is touching the body or chassis. Otherwise - I've seen other cases where people gutted the cats and the sound took a turn for the worse. It's hard to get a balanced sound sometimes. I had Borla's on my Corvette....for 1 day. They sounded great but at 60-70mph on the highway the drone noise was unbearable. These were just mufflers. When I went to a full cat-back system the sound was great and no drone inside. That's because the company did the research on what worked - you are guessing at it and that's very hard.
 
The resonator in front of the muffer is what I meant.
They work welll with minimal restriction.
Get ones that are punched, not sawn and rough inside.
 
Magnaflow sounds awesome. I have one on my Expedition.

The 40-series flows are known for drone. It is just something they do.

My Mustang was so loud at 2000 RPM, you couldn't hear each other SHOUTING back and forth.
 
On my 56 ford ( w/ 302/C4 conversion), I liked stacks the best and they look cool sound great and they dont rust as fast - just be sure to drill 1/8"D water drains at the up-bend elbow. We made the stacks from some old vette sidepipes from a wreck at the junkyard for 100 bucks. Of course this was on a stepside.

its your truck you should do as you wish and not feel bad for it.

its a dumb law.
