Alright guys when I had my cat replaced 5months back the shop coudnt get the muffler hanger to hold good enough to not rattle so they welded from the base ofthe tail pipe a steel rod and welded it to thelittle metal over hand to the side of the pipe. First time the weld broke in 2 weeks.this time 5 months. ( the shop is a bunch of screws) anyway........should I go to them agai or just go to a muffler shop in town. I know of a reputabls one close by. I understand from a they should do the job right stand point I should but its just so frusterating to have people half [censored] a job. Also is there a good way to fix it? The hanger design is stupid and welding it like they did is also dumb...... what to do? This is on the 98 saturn sl2

Is this a saturn s series? Those things do break all the time. IMO the heat from the exhaust makes them rust right where the mild steel meets the pipe. Any time you mess with the exhaust you stress these things and yeah they can go out.

First shop, 2nd shop, get your self a HF stick welder, whatever!

Well the hanger it came with goes arounf the muffler and then bend at a 90 degree angle ane slides into where the rubber gromment is. Problem is the hanger gives and lets the muffler hit the lower lateraal links on the suspension thats why they welded a bar from the tail pipe to the frame but the welds break dues to driveline vibrations and what not.

Oh wow they are hacks!

You can get that muffler hanger in and out without removing the muffler, so long as the pipe is banging on the axle. It's a toughie, the rubber on the frame side of things is going to want to hold on. If you want to try a different aggravation, take out the two bolts holding the "receiver" bracket to the frame. Beware, you need u-joints and extensions for your sockets and good luck.

Why not weld a bar onto a muffler clamp saddle and then clamp it to the exhaust pipe? These guys obviously cant weld for squat.

I think the problem is probably that welding it with no way for it to flex just results in the welds breaking. How much do you think letting a muffler shop fix it would cost?

Aren't these engines supposed to move front/back when torqued or shifted? I'm pretty sure nothing on the exhaust system is supposed to be solid. If they are welding to frame no wonder it keeps breaking.
