I have a 99 Explorer that needs a new muffler . I am wondering what is a typical cost to have this done ?

I think you can buy a new one for probably 100 bucks then have someone weld it up or remount it depending on how it's designed.

It depends a lot upon the condition of your exhaust system. Rust is the silent killer in NY. If you need new pipes, welded exhaust hangers, etc., the cost will increase.

Agree with Oilnerd. Depends on what all will need to be replaced. Likely you'll need a new tailpipe/resonator if the muffler is shot. Also depends on the muffler itself - my '97 Explorer was more expensive due to the configuration of the inlet pipes.

I got new exhaust from the cat back on an S-10 about a year ago for $175 + tax. I went to a locally owned place hoping they could do it cheap. They bent the pipes themselves and use thick, quality pipe. I did get the cheapest muffler they had, because the truck is a beater. Overall I was very happy with te job.

get the DynoMax cat back kit. It's the same price as one of those dual inlet single outlet mufflers. You can install it yourself in very little time if you have any inkling to do so.

Thanks for the info .I figured the rust was a contributing factor . One of the hangars has to be welded as well . The noise has really increased over the past 2 weeks . I was considering purchasing a bolt on type and giving it a shot myself but I am recovering from surgery and don't want to push my luck .I will most likely have a small muffler shop nearby do it .

If you're talking about the exhaust, then rust is anything but a "silent" killer smile
