I was given 2 5L jugs of motul specific 229.51 5w30 by a neighbor today , would it be ok to use this oil in a GM 4.3, or should I pass it on to someone who has a vehicle that specs this oil ? TIA
With a HTHSV of 3.5cP it's heavier than necessary but it won't do any harm to run particularly in the State of Florida.
Another option (and what I'd do) would be to buy some 0W-20 oil (any brand) and run a 50/50 mix of the two. That will give you a lighter 5W-30 close to that spec'd by GM.
It's a good oil but CATERHAM is correct -- probably heavier than necessary.
You could probably flip it on Craigslist pretty easily. That stuff is typically mail-order only.
Any suggestions as to an OCI using it ? I am mainly a short tripper , 5 miles to work 5 miles home , an occasional 30-40 mile run. and I probably will follow Mr.Caterhams advice of using it with 0w20.
Motul 229.51 also carries the API SM/CF Starburst. So, it does meet your specification. Furthermore, I wouldn't worry about the fact it meets additional specifications as well.
Mixing this oil with something that is not specified or recommended (0W-20) for your vehicle is not a good idea and will not produce a better viscosity.

Since you're into "specifications" M1 0W-20 meets the Corvette 4718M spec' if the OP wanted to use that and a 50/50 blend will produce a more appropriate HTHSV in the 3.0-3.1cP range which is what is viscosity spec'd the OP's GM engine.

CATERHAM:
I am familiar with GM recommendations on SAE grade, but I am not familiar with GM recommendations for HTHS. Where could someone find GM's recommendations for HTHS?
GM doesn't have a minimum HTHSV specification per se.
But the FF spec' oil for their most highly stressed engines is M1 5W-30 which has a HTHSV of 3.1cP.
