Hey guys,

Apologies in advanced if this has been discussed.

I have a new-to-me BMW B48 and went down the rabbit hole.

Original fill: 5w-30 (LL-01).
Manual states: SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40, and SAE 5W-30.
Service history: 0w-30 LL-01
Latest technical documentation states: 0w-20 (LL-17FE)

I live in a warm climate (California) and the car will be tuned and driven aggressively (once warmed up :))
LSPI appears to be a somewhat of a concern on these engines so with all that in mind I'm looking at 5w-30 API SP.
Narrowed it down to the Motul 8100 Power and Liqui Moly Top Tec 4200.
How does that sound? Thoughts? Anything I am overlooking?

Planning to keep this car for a long time.

Thank you kindly and happy thanksgiving!

Until tuned, go to the local Auto Zone or AAP and get Mobil1 ESP 5W30.
When you tune it, move a grade up, and you can go either LL01 or LL04. What you have now in the sump in LL01FE (FE: Fuel efficiency), same goes with LL17FE (0W20).
If you go LL01, you have plenty options to go with: Mobil1 0W40 FS (Wal Mart), castrol 5W40 (Wal Mart, would not be my first or 5th choice for that matter). IMO, Mobil1 0W40FS is always good choice for any Euro engine that can take full SAPS oil and hard driving (it is their entry track oil, I used it on track in my 328). Motul X-Cess 5W40 GEN2, Motul X-Clean 5W40 GEN2 (Low-SAPS oil), Castrol Edge 0W30 (on Amazon, would be my first choice, but it is bit more than M1 0W40).

Thanks for chiming in!
91 ACN is the best gas we get here and some of those oils have a lot of calcium compared to the BMW TPT 0-W30

I agree with Edy but if you must stay lower viscosity for paranoia or some other reasons, skip both of those oils for the Motul Specific LL-01FE 0W-30. It actually has BMW approval unlike the power, is API SP, and it’s got a good looking additive package on VOA/UOA. Again, I agree with Edy and If tuned and driving hard would use M1 0W-40 or PP Euro 5W-40. There’s nothing impressive about the Motul Power line or the LM in my opinion. If you’re going to go away from approvals I think there are better oils.

Which ones? M1 0W-40 and all the other oils he mentioned are now on API SP formulations so there is no concern. The exception is Edge 0W-30.

Any API SP oil will have lower calcium.
Also, take into consideration that oils with MB229.52 have an LSPI test.
Castrol Edge 0W30 (pink stripe version) will have high calcium. New version (still labeled API SL) probably has actually API SP additive package. However, bcs. limits on phosphorous in XW30 grades by API it can only be labeled as SL.

I was looking at virgin VOA section of the forums. I guess these could've been pre SP formulation?
