Motormaster uses two versions of Champs for same filter number

I have found in the past that Champ manufactures several versions of filters. Also, they manufacture the Motomaster OE Plus Filters sold at Canadian Tire in Canada. Here are two 10060 filters. The one on the left was purchased over a year ago and is used. The one on the right was recently purchased. Although they have the same model numbers, the one on the left is taller, and the one on the right uses the “double plate” design that some Champs have. The both have metal louvers and an orange poppet. The louvers were identical but the shadowing made the photos differ a bit. Enjoy.

Consumer products like oil filters don't have very stringent configuration control standards. This is a good case of that. Both are able to be used interchangeably, so the model number didn't change with a configuration change. Nothing new in the oil filter world. If oil filter makers changed the model number every time they made a design change nobody could keep up with the application data.

Are we sure the one on the left is a Champ? The baseplate doesn't look like one?
I know of at least three different baseplates for Champs: the double base plate with 8 round holes, the single plate with 13 oval holes, and the single plate with 8 round holes. Also here is the date stamping for two Champ XL’s and two Motomaster OE plus Filters made by Champ. They all have the date and model number and Made in USA.

One was made a year ago, the other 4 years ago. Designs can change over a few years

Yep, fair enough. I’ll keep an eye on new ones. I plan to pick up a few more at the next Canadian Tire store sale. To me these look like the old AC Delco PF 48 before they went to the 48E.

Hey, the sale starts this afternoon.

Here is the baseplate design with oval holes.

On sale again this week for $9.76 (15% off).

The OE Plus now has the 13 oval holes with an e-core (although the pic on the box shows the 8 circular hole baseplate).

But it’s the same model as the Champ XL pictured above. So the filter should be pretty good.
