Ok ever since i joined this forum i have asked a lot of questions about motor oil (like is this stuff good? or is this stuff better than that stuff? etc) well anyhow i have finally come to a conclusion. i have tested multiple brands and weights of oils in the following vehicles.
1988 Ford Truck 260,000 mi (burned oil at start up)
1991 GMC safari (chevy astro)(burned oil at start up)
1993 Ford Truck 135,000 mi (consumed oil, but no smoke or leaks)
2000 Dodge Durango 140,280 mi (peachy no troubles yet)
2006 Kia Optima. 22,000 mi (not even broken in yet)
in the 88 ford, and the 91 safari i used only 10W30 high mileage oils:
Pennzoil high mileage
Super Tech High mileage
Castrol GTX High mileage
Vlavoline maxlife synthetic blend
All four of those oils performed equal by stopping oil leaks, oil burning, and raised oil pressure (about 10-20 PSI) these oils work if you have a beater that needs some work, but is not worth re building.
in the 1993 Ford truck i used the following 15W40 HDEO's which helped drastically reduce my oil consumption.
Chevron Delo 400 multigrade
Shell rotella multigrade
both did well, but the rotella was better about gathering more crud from the engine because it had more detergents (so i have been told) both are fine oils use em with confidence
in both the 06 Kia, and the 00 dodge I ran the following 5w30 conventional/blended oils
Peak
Super Tech
Valvoline
76 Super synthetic blend
Valvoline dura blend
Pennzoil conventional
Quaker State conventional
Castrol GTX
Mobil Clean 5000
well to be brutally honest the only differences between these 7 conventional oils was the color of the bottle and the price per quart. They all did equally well, no real evidence of evaporation, or thermal break down (this goes for the two blends as well). But they all performed well and i did not have to add any oil between changes on both cars. use with confidence
