Other threads have considered the question of using ATF instead of motor oil in engines. Now here's the opposite question: what would happen if motor oil were to be used instead of ATF in an automatic transmission? If you want some assumptions, base your response on 5W20 or 5W30 oil and a late-model transmission (as opposed to an older Ford C6 or GM THM 400). Also assume total replacement with ATF. Finally, would dino oil make a difference vs. synthetic?

In theory it is do'able if the oil was not friction modified. For example it might be possable to use an oil like Delvac-1 in place of Dex III. Any oil that is energy conserveing or friction modified would be out of the question!

I don't know about now, but many years ago the California Highway Patrol required that the automatic transmissions in their patrol cars be compatible with the regular motor oil they used.

Dex III is friction modified, compared to Type F

I think it's more correct to say that Type F is "friction enhanced" when compared to any Dexron fluid. In the 70's many trans shops use one fluid, Type F .. and Trick Shift was MEGA dosed with friction material causing you to lunch your auto in a very short time. The Dex spec'd autos that Type F went in ..only experienced firmer shifts and any long term wear was usually never realized by the owner ..since the car was usually junked or sold before another 50k was put on it.
