Motor Guard installation options

I am new to the bypass filter concept and have spent some time here doing research and reading about everyone's experiences. I have decided to invest in bypass filters for my vehicles and prefer to use the Motor Guard product but am leary of punching a hole thru my oilpan. I would much rather use a drain plug return similar to the option offered by the Oil Guard products.

How can i utilize the Motor Guard products without having to punch a hole in the oil pan (or drill into the valve cover/thru the oil cap)? I have read about accounts of using a perma-cool 'sandwich' (i think that is the term) but dont exactly understand how the parts/plumbing work for the sandwich method.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
What vehicle are you going to install the Motor Guard on?

My Chevy Astro had a factory sandwich adaptor providing oil to the radiator oiler cooler, so it was quite easy to install. Using the sandwich adaptor works really nicely. I can understand the apprehension of poking a hole in your oil pan; however, using the sandwich adaptor solves that problem. It is worth the time to have the filter and lines with a down-flow for the return so the filter is empth when it comes time to change the element.

Ralph is an excellent vendor to work with, as he is very knowledgable about oil filteration.
 
Yes, atlanta, as Astro mentioned, a PermaCool adapter makes it a snap.

The sandwich adapter is basically a wall. The oil slams against it and wants to go out a port. This port is connected to the bypass filter. The bypass filter's outlet is plumbed to the other side of this "wall". Since the bypass filter can not provide enough flow ..there is a relief port built into the adapter. A "hole in the wall". This hole is held closed sprung ball. The excess flow forces it open. The hole looks small ..but it handles a decent flow of oil. This "back pressure" provides the push for the bypass filter.

If you tell us what you're thinking of installing it on ..someone may have custom information for your application(s).
 
I understand the sandwich concept now - i just hadnt seen any pictures of one in practice on the forum installations that folks have shown. I guess I am more of a visual learner. I am thinking of putting a bypass oil filter on a 99 expedition (5.4 liter) in addition to a transmission bypass filter (this seems more straightforward to me conceptually - the expedition has a transmission cooler so i just hook the filer in series with the cooler?) and a bypass fuel filter - which seems the easiest to install.

Does anyone have good pictures of the sandwich itself and how it is hooked into the oil bypass system?

The http://www.gulfcoastfilters.com/0-1jr Tran Installation.htm is an excellent picture of connecting a bypass filter for a transmission. Ralph has modified the Motor Guard such that using a bypass connector is no needed. Atlanta should be able to just remove the return line from the radiator, install male/female connectors with rubber pipes to the Motor Guard ATF filter and he's ready to go.

I would suggest adding an external cooler after the filter to keep the transmission temperature below the 180 degree mark for longer life.

97Astro/Gary Allan - thanks for your replies - on the transmission filter - i can just hook up directly into the return line from the existing transmission cooler right?

Also - is there any modification needed to the perma-cool sandwich or is the bypass 'hole' large enough to take oil to the bypass while keeping enough pressure in the system? Alternatively, is there any risk that the sandwich will divert too much oil to the bypass and 'starve' the motor/burn up the pump?
 
I used the Motor Guard ATF filter on both the transmission and the engine. I need to install a temperature guage on the transmission as I would like to see the fluid stay below 180 degrees if possible. I would put a temp prob off the transmission output line and possibly another prob on the return line with some form of a switch between the two probs so I can see the max and min temps.

You will need to do nothing to the bypass filter as it only will accept a given amout of oil. The Motor Guard has an internal "bypass" so that you don't need to accomidate for the flowthru problem. Realize that the sandwich adaptor will only route the amount of oil to the ports that the port will accept. The rest will be returned to the system. While you are installing the engine oil filter, I would strongly suggest adding an engine oil cooler placed infront of the radiator.
 
The relief port on the Permacool can move a high volume of oil. It looks, at first glance, as a highly restrictive passage. It's actually (practically) ..just a hole. They have a virtual "cage" that the spring and ball can't fall out of ..and put a lead sinker (a disk) on the end to hold it together.

The worst side effect that has been reported (and this is rare) is a slightly reduced pressure after installation. If this is the case ..an addition of an EXTREMELY SMALL HOLE being drilled in the sandwich adapter typically solves the problem. The additional hole being about the size of the smallest drill in your index. I put two 3/16 (approx) holes in my Permacool and it rendered it useless in my application.

This has pretty much proved to be a non-issue (I do understand the apprehension that you're feeling VERY WELL though

Yes, if he uses a Motor Guard setup for a transmission ..this would relieve any anxiety about the sandwich's internal relief mechanism ..or so I would reason.
