Friend of mine does his own work on his '03 Town Car, and we went out to get the oil for his oil change this afternoon. He used to use Motorcraft Full Synthetic 5W-20, but later switched to Pennzoil Conventional 5W-20 when he could no longer source it locally. He follows the oil life monitor on the overhead console, which triggers every 10,000 km (6,250 miles) on average.
Went to the Chrysler dealership this morning, the only place other than the Ford dealership where you can source a 5W-20, and they didn't have any Pennzoil in stock. Instead, they had Mopar's 5W-20 meeting API SM/ILSAC GF-4/ACEA C3 with everything written on it in a dozen languages. It was sourced from the US, although I think the product's primary market is Europe and the Middle East considering all the European languages and Arabic printed on it. I did feel a bit reserved myself when I saw the ACEA C3 rating (low SAPS), considering the sulfur content of gas here.
That said, crazy isn't even a word to describe the price at $9.31 per liter.
Motorcraft's full synthetic was $10.30 per quart, which for a synthetic isn't bad considering the competition. $9.31 a liter for conventional is too rich for my blood, but my buddy seems happy with it, which is what counts.
Having said that, out of curiosity, how much does it cost for this stuff in the US? I tried to see if I can find out online, but there's nothing about price.
