Modern McCarthyism - Political Opinion

Lott is still the one who stepped down, and the GOP is still the party that asked him to. Why is the GOP so quick to fold on such issues, and to whine so much about it. Truman had a sign on desk that said 'The Buck Stops Here', and he is also known for 'If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen'. Surely the GOP had lots of support on 'right wing radio', so what's to complain about ?

Another issue is that the major media isn't liberal, as they certainly didn't ask the hard questions about Iraq and pursue the issues that we're grappling with now. A good one is why after 9/11, when all aircraft were grounded, Bush let Saudis and the bin Ladens fly out of the country without proper interrogation. The media is in the business of SELLING news, so they aren't going to lose business by being too liberal for their reading public. We expect the media to break important, unpopular stories, but a continued, decided liberal slant won't sell enough to keep the big operations in business. If the media appears to be liberal it's because your political views are outside of the politically centered views that result in the most customers for the major media organizations. Smaller media organizations that aren't trying to be all things to all people and tenured professers are some of the few who can afford to ignore the political climate.

So according to this logic..........since the majority of americans are democrat.......then the media would have to be liberally biased, or risk losing the "reading public". Correct?

No. Since newspapers must cater to a range of readers, they try to hit in the middle of the range. If those middle of the range views appear non-mainstream to you, it means that you, by definition, are off in one of the tail ends of the distribution.

quote:

The liberal Democrats want to do what they want, when they want and how they want regardless of anything else. This 'luxury' is not given to conservative Republicans.

Someone is clearly not paying attention, and has missed the numerous election law, political funding and redistricting abuses, the abuses of parliamentary rules in the House and Senate, and the list goes on. If Repubs can not do what they want, how have they overturned or drastically weakened every area of social progress from the last twenty years?

How many ways do you want to slice this TMW? When was the last time you heard the "mainstream media" sing the praises of a republican...........When they found one to disagree with Bush?

How could anybody ever disagree with Bush? The man is for a balanced budget, educating the children, small government, he is against big business taking advantage the little guy, and God is on his side, because he is a christian. If he could only quit throwing all of our money out the window (iraq), how about spending on the kids? If he would only keep the pill pushers from gouging the poor sick people instead of helping them screw them out of their last $$. Plus I don't trust people that talk like they are religious and act like they are world wrestling idiots. Guess he won't get my vote this time around, too bad I live in Missouri a swing state. Repub's for anybody but bush

Good lord, liberals and the defenders of liberals make me wanna freaking puke!

You people that think the media is anything but 3,977,876,876,876 miles left of center need to get hooked on phonics and learn to read.

God bless W. and God have mercy on the mindless liberals.

We all pay for our mistakes. Liberal's, the time for you to pay up is coming. I can't wait to see you all eat the socialist pie you helped bake. That little freedom of speech thing you hold so dear (as long as it is liberal speech) is gone. It is called political correctness. Soon it will be un-PC to be a liberal and YOU will get persecuted for being what you you believe.

Americans had hoped that the dark days of the McCarthy witch hunts were over. Senator McCarthy (a Republican) has been justifiably placed into the annals of American shame, however, his methods have not been forgotten.

With friends like this, who needs enemies?

I hope that Justin Darr's better at retail management than at spotting double standards.

Compare:
quote:

The black helicopters have landed once again outside the Democratic National Committee Headquarters. So, what are the Men in Black delivering to the Democrats this time?

versus

quote:

Republican elected officials, and Conservatives in general are forced to live under a constant double standard where their freedom of speech is oppressed out of fear of being declared racist, sexist, or any of the myriads of other “ists” the Liberals claim are destroying America.

Both sides of the political spectrum have their conspiracy theories. If you're going to discredit "Liberal" claims of conspiracy while falling back on your own cushy "Liberal Media" claims, you've got to work harder to discredit the former while validating the latter.

Personally, I'd consider someone who regards himself
quote:

forced to live under a constant double standard where their freedom of speech is oppressed out of fear of being declared racist, sexist, or any of the myriads of other “ists”

to be pretty darn paranoid. Maybe I should just add another layer of foil to my hat.

There seems to be some confusion on party affiliation and political leanings. In the last election Gore received 48.4% of the popular vote, and Bush received 47.9%, which is pretty much evenly split. The results don't mean that 48.4% of people are ultra left wing radicals, and that 47.9% of the people are right wing militia members. The majority of the people are 'centrists' or 'moderates', regardless or party, and while we currently have conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans it's not as prevalent as it was prior to the emergence of the 'Moral Majority'. Rockefeller was a classic liberal Republican, an uncommon political species these days, and he never gave another dime to the GOP after the treatment he received from his own party in his race with Nixon. In addition most of the 'Dixiecrats' have moved to the Republican party.

The tendancy to see things in black and white, Bush prior to invading Iraq as example; 'We are good and they evil', 'they are very evil and we are very good', 'they are very very evil and we are very very good', is a common tactic among cults. Identifying an enemy, especially hidden ones among us, is essential to polarizing a people. I let my NRA membership drop around the same that Bush Sr did, and recognize GOP tactics as being similar to those used by the NRA for years. The primary means of identifying an enemy is using code words, such 'cultural war' which means that anything that you do is justified, and the most common code word these days is 'liberal'. Anything 'liberal' is evil as they're the ones being fought in the cultural war. It's essential to insure that the 'true believers' find no common ground with the enemy, as the political agenda would be at risk.
