It seems like many of you out there use moble 1, other than price and its easy to find what other reasons would you use it? In my 2002 tacoma with the 3.4 i was using redline synthetics till i recently switched to amsoil. What are you thoughts. Thanks.

I have an 04 tacoma with the 3.4l and until recently I had only run 5w30 durablend and thought the engine sounded and ran great. 2 days ago I refilled with GC and it runs 10000X better. I think this engine likes thick 30 weights so if you want to try something new try something heavy.

I've only run two oils for 44,000 miles in my 02 3.4L Tacoma, M1 5W30 and GC 0W30. Well, three if you count the factory fill. It runs/idles smooth as silk with GC.

But, the real decision should be based off OCIs. Few Mobil 1 users ever run 10K+ OCIs. So, for short 3K-5K OCIs, I'd use Chevron Supreme/Havoline 5W30. For longer drains it would be M1, GC, RL, Amsoil take your pick.

If you can afford the best Amsoil and Red Line (and) your vehicles are doing real well with them... stick with em'.

It's not the name of the oil that matters. The way the oil performs is all that matters & every vehicle is different. Some like to drink GC -- others Pennzoil -- others Amsoil... etc.

If your engine is clean, quiet & doesn't use any oil.... then you can't fix what ain't broke.

M1 tends to be great for toyota engine metallurgy. Doesnt mean others arent excellent too, its just that M1 seems to prove it time and time again, while having the added benefit of being very readily available.

Amsoil has some great specs, and seems to thicken up a lot of times, which, from reading the prior posts, may be a benefit in this engine (?)

Like many others, I have used Mobil 1 because of price, availability, and perceived better protection for hard driving over the 5K oci's I do with my Firebird. I'm not so naive to think that it's the absolute best out there, but I think it is a cut above most.

Nowadays, I'm purchasing good quality group III or higher synthetics on price-- between the AZ clearance, mail-in rebates, sales, and B3G3 offers, I haven't spent more than $2.75 on a quart of synthetic oil, and often less.

Well it is bang for the buck! Mobil-1 is the only true synthetic that can be bought at the retail level. A lot of people do not like to have to mail order their oil so convience is a big issue. Then you have rateing a lot of people want an oil that is API aproved or at least has themanufacture spec. for their vechile. Then you have price. I looked at Amsoil long and hard for years and used it off and on. For me it was not cost effective when I was able to by pre GF-4 M1 for $3.88 a quart when ASL was selling for $5.35 or more plus shipping. Amsoil dealer's in my area were here today gone tomorrow.

Then you have the Toyota engine designs. For the most part they do about the same on M1 or Amsoil so why spend more for Amsoil? I never liked the idea of haveing to pay someone a $20 multi-level marketing few each year to get a good price on their oil! They ought to give me their best price from the get go!

The only synthetic that I think does any better in Toyota's then M1 or Amsoil is Redline but their price is stiff! I do not think the price is worth it unless you trying to get a trophy UOA or you just like their product.

If I decided to use Amsoil I would buy it from a "Site Sponsor" or do the prefered customer thing with them. It is always better to keep the money in the family or in town so to speak! I would use their Series 3000 5W30 as I think it is their best all around product!

This engine doesn't care. I would run anything from Quaker state(OK I would dope it with LC and limit it to 6 months) to Redline in it with no worries.. I just happen to be running M1 in mine because I got it so **** cheap and I have heard that it does well in the Toyota motors. Mail order oils such as Schaeffers and Amsoil are also great.. just depends on how the logistics work out for you.. If doing 1 year OCI's it doesn't really matter if you have to order it.

Your comment in paragraph 1 doesn't hold as much water anymore. The new EP Mobil-1 is selling for $5.99 per qt. in my area. The preferred customer price for ASL 5W30 is $4.85 ($4.60 in 12 qt case quantities) so even after freight charges it is a better deal than the latest M1, and it has always been an extended drain oil.

Paragraph two, "ought to give me the best price from the get go". We can't do that. Why? To quote Steve Martin from the movie The Jerk.. "

Oh, It's a profit deal" . If dealers offered PC prices to everybody for no PC fee, they would not make any money. That is dumb. Even dumber than draining Mobil-1 every 3000 miles.

The PC deal is a very good deal for consumers and not such a good deal for dealers as preferred customers pay the same for product as dealers do. One should consider the PC fee as a "rite of passage" to superior products at a competitive price and realize what a good deal it is.

Finally I agree 100% with your comments in paragraph three. If you are going to buy Amsoil, buy it from a site sponsor. They spend their own money to keep this site free for you, period. Plus they are here today AND here tomorrow.

Don, Make sure you add that $20 fee+ oil cost + tax+shipping then tell me what that quart cost? I can buy TSUV in a 5 quart Jug at Walmart for under $20 and I do not have to pay shipping or a $20 MLM fee! SO for me TSUV is less then $4 a quart wich is still cheaper then Amsoil! If you compare Mobil-1 to ASL it is still cheaper! You are compareing ASL to M1EP wich is Mobil's premium line. ASL is not Amsoil's premium line so you are not doing an apples to apples comparison! GF-4 M-1 is like $3.99 a quart at Walmart but they do not offer it in the 5 quart jugs so that is individual quart price.

I am sure that they are not loseing any money with the prefered customer plan at all. I am sure that in addition to your $20 they still get a comission on every quart of oil you buy! I am going to guess it is at lasr $.35-$.55 cents a quart. The product is being shipped from AMsoil's warehouses so it is not like they are handleing any stock etc... THey are getting paid basicly for signing you up on the front end and the back side!

Don you make some valid points. Here is what I question. What is Amsoil going to do for me that M1 EP won't, price being about the same? If price = quality, then their isn't that much, if any difference between the two products for the most part. (ASL/ATM I'm referring too) Mobil 1, IMO, has always been a major road block for Amsoil. It's a very good oil found anywhere. Very few people want to order oil. Sales for Amsoil continue to go up so maybe in time I will be proven wrong.
