Where do you have this knowledge of their mixture? I would be you are way off on this since their specs are different.

Mobil 1 EP: http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil_1_Extended_Performance.asp

Truck & SUV: http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lubes/PDS/GLXXENPVLMOMobil1_Truck_SUV_5W-30.asp

From VOA's off this site..do a search.

Making others search in order to prove your point doesn't really do much for your side of the conversation. If you want to make a point, you should have the information ready to present. Otherwise you're just presenting a bucket with no water in it figuratively speaking.

Plus VOAs only test for certain known additives.

EDIT: So I thought I would spend time today looking for these VOAs with the same additive packages. You are mistaken daman. Check these links: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubb...true#Post772093

They seem pretty different to me. Check your facts before you post something like that next time.

All insults and cheapshots aside. . .

Given the requirements for API SM/GF-4, I would look at these specs and focus on the Zinc and Boron. If you have looked at these things on this forum you'll notice that Zinc across many lines that meet API SM are very, very similar. Within these two oils--EP and SUV--there is roughly at least one and possibly two standard deviations difference just running some quick estimates in my head. Boron is in the same ball park.

Notice how the EP also has some iron showing up. I believe Molekule mentioned a while ago that there are a couple anti-wear agents that have iron as part of the additive. That iron is found in many Mobil 1 lines with the exception of the Truck & SUV. I'm not saying that is necessarily the case, but it certainly takes away from your points that they are the same.

That being said, I would suspect that the add packs are different especially since the Truck and SUV is not rated as "Energy Conserving" last time I checked, and the M1 EP is.

I love how when the name "Mobil" is in the threads name there are tons of views and posts. Is the name "Mobil" becoming the new "PLEASE READ!" ?

Not talking "Energy Conserving" i was looking at additives(numbers),,they look similar to me within a few points.

But some of the more important ones are a full standard deviation apart. That pretty much takes it out of the realm of chance. In this case the statistics say they are different.

I used 5w30 in my brand new GM Suv I bought in 2005. I went overkill by changing the oil and filter at 1K, then again at 5k, and 5k changes thereafter. I used K&N oil filters only because the "genuises" at GM put the oil filter so close to the block than you couldn't even get a filter wrench on it. The K&N filter has a 1" nut that I could just use a 1" socket and wha-la..easy. I switched from Mobil 1 to Mobil 1 extended performance. Two reasons: #1) I read somewhere that M1 wasn't "truely" synthetic #2) I figured if I bought oil that was good for 15,000 miles but kept changing it at 5k, theres no way M1 could deny me $$ if my engine blew up and for some reason GM denied the claim! I was changing in a third of what it could do!! I now own a 09 Venza 3.5L V6. I am on the fence on what to use with it. I want the best gas mileage possible. Is the M1 Advance fuel mileage actually formulated to give better gas mileage or is it just marketing hype? Trying to decide between M1, M1 Advance Fuel Mileage, or PP. I have always used Puralator Pure One filter (except in my GM SUV as stated above) and had really good results with them. ---VenzaTRD

Nyquist, how are you getting standard deviations when (from what I can tell from the links provided) all you all are looking at is one data pt ? Did I miss something in a link somewhere ?

A simple formula for standard deviations is basically the square root of the average data points. So if you have three samples, you take the average of the sample data and then take the square root. I used a couple different oils but also the EP and SUV.

Take the zinc in EP and SUV. EP has a zinc content of 726. SUV has a zinc content of 608. The average of the two is 667. The square root of that is about 25.83. If these two were to be similar enough that there was a high chance it was the same additive package, they would have to be within 25.83 ppm of each other. In this case they are not.

If you want a larger sample size for more statistical significance, factor in some other synthetic 5w30s.

All this assumes that Blackstone's equipment is calibrated correctly.
