Has anyone noticed that Mobil doesn't recommend Mobil 5000 to meet auto manufacturer OCI's? All manufacturers now recommend OCI's of at least 7,500 miles. Is this an attempt to push more people to buy their semi-syn and full-syn products or is it an indirect way of saying that dino shouldn't be used past the 5,000 mile mark? I don't think it should be based on the UOA's I've seen here--disappointingly low TBN's at 5,000 mile OCI's even with full synthetics--even GC showed a low TBN @ 5K in a recent UOA. I agree with Mobil's breakdown--dino up to a max of 5,000 miles, semi-syn up to a max of 7,500 and full syn over 7,500. Comments?

My '05 Ford Explorer...5,000 mile OCI's

Wow--didn't realize there was a manufacturer still out there with 5,000 mile OCI's. All the Japanese are 7,500+ and I think Honda is now up to 10,000.

As of Model Year 2005, ALL Toyotas have a 5k/6MO OCI.

There is NO Severe Service listed.

My owner's manual says to change oil every 10,000 miles; can I still use Mobil Clean 5000?

Yes. For applications where the oil life indicator light or owner's manual recommended change interval exceeds 5,000 miles and a conventional oil is recommended, Mobil Clean 5000 will provide protection for the full oil change interval.

This is from the FAQ on the Mobil 5000 Website.

FAQ #3

So, to review...

Mobil 5000 is ok and meets all Warrenty requirements for even 10k OCIs or when ever the Oil life monitor goes off.

Toyotas OCI interval is 5k miles or 6 months.

Take care, Bill

PS: I'm in the mindset Hondas 10k OCI on ANY Oil is crazy.

You go ahead and knock yourself out and do it. (it's your car)

I'll change my Toyotas oil out MUCH sooner. (and also my Dads Honda powered Vue..)

That's the first time that I'm aware of where a manufacturer has actually REDUCED the recommended OCI rather than increased it---I have a 2001 Camry and the manual has 7,500/5,000 OCI's for standard/severe service. Thanks for the Mobil FAQ which solved the mystery. Thanks Bill!

Ford reduced their non-severe OCIs from 7500 to 5000 miles in the early 90s. Severe OCIs remained at 3000 miles.

I think it was a pro-active attempt to prevent sludge, which seems to have worked well--are there any Ford engines known for sludge?

My 05 Grand Caravan says every 3k on severe service and 6k on regular use. I say 2 or 3 changes at 3k to break in the engine then go to changes every 5k with 5/30 syn til my stash runs dry then it will be penz 5/20 for life.

I have a new 2006 Honda Ridgeline truck and it does not have an OCI recommendation at all as to miles. It says to change oil (including the factory fill, only when the OLM shows service is due.

From folks at the Ridgeline forum who have followed this advice it appears that, based on driving habits, service due (15% oil life or below on the OLM) hits about on an average of 6,000 miles, a few showed more miles and some less but that is a good average.

Honda's manual says to use 5W20 and change it only if the OLM does not show "service due" after 12 months. The interesting thing is that when I picked up the truck the service department put a sticker on my window showing first oil change should be at 3750 miles - go figure.

Changed for 2005, now its 6-mo/5,000 miles for every app.

Basically it's all about marketing a supplementary warranty provided by Mobil.

Of course Mobil 5000/7500/etc is an API licensed oil that will meet all warranty requirements if used at the manufacturers' oil change recommendations. Your *** is covered there.

Past the factory warranty period is where the Mobil warranty kicks in. The way I've read it, they'll cover any kind of failure from oil related problems provided you use it for the less than the mileage/time they specify. I'd think "oil related failure" would include stuff like extreme viscosity breakdown or severe additive depletion that leads to rapid engine failure. They're also fairly generous as to what they consider "normal" driving for the warranty. They don't mention anything about short-trip, cold weather, or stop&go as severe conditions. Only stuff like towing or excessive idling.

Unlike the Pennzoil or QS warranties, you're not obligated to used their product for the rest of eternity.

Which is the recommended viscosity for the Gr Caravan...5w20 or 5w30?

I had my 05 civic changed at the dealership. Next oil change due after 3000 miles.

Interesting. I heard that it was 7500 miles normal and 3750 for Severe service.

I do know that for 2005 they stated in the "passport" that all units OCI is 5k/6mo.

Take care, Bill
