I had a UOA done on Mobil 1 5W-30. Mobil states the viscosity @100c is 10, but my UOA with 6300 miles shows 11.6.

Why would the oil thicken ? I thought it would thin out.

Well, first you have to assume that the lab is right, and that the PDS is right. Some of the oils, and subsequently their spec sheets, changed with the move to GF-6/SP.

There are three factors in play that affect viscosity in service:
1. Fuel dilution - Driving down viscosity
2. VII shearing - Driving down viscosity
3. Oxidation - Driving up viscosity

Typically, blenders shoot for balancing #2 and #3 so that the oil remains roughly the same viscosity over its planned service interval. That is, as some of the VII polymers shear, a bit of base oil oxidation compensates for it, balancing it out. Where a wrench gets thrown into this party is with #1, which will drive down overall viscosity regardless and has become more and more prevalent with the introduction of GDI/TGDI.

If you have a port injected engine, fuel dilution is less likely to be an issue and subsequently, it's possible to see a bit of oxidative thickening in service.
 
It used to be 11 or 11.1. Mobil must have changed their formulation once again. Your oil may be a previous formulation with a higher viscosity.

The pour point changes as well. Used to be -49F, now -43.6F (same as AFE 0W-30).

What did the oil look and smell like? Was it service for a year?

M1 FS Series PDS for API-SP that I have on file reads:

Kinematic Viscosity @ 100 C, mm2/s, ASTM D445 _____________________ 11.4

So almost 90% stationary idling hours.

You must service a fleet of squads.

Do you see any trace of K in the UOA report.

That is way too long. I would expect an OCI in the 200-300 hour range. What interval did the Oil Life Monitor suggest?

Seems rather odd the math doesn't work for me 2000 hours is a little over 83.33 days of 24 hours on the road. Is that 2000 hours for the life of the vehicle rather than this one OCI?

This unit has a total of 4,850 hrs

Put into service 2/15/22
 
2000 hours! Post the wear and silicon #'s. 5,000 oci might be better .02.

Cop cars idling for ever and ever. Never liked that part of the job but I understand the importance in certain locations. I am a Nazi when it comes to idling for no necessary need.
