Oil Mobil 1 5w30 SuperSyn
1993 Toyota Camry V6
Miles on Unit 99513
Miles on Oil 872
Sample Date 1/11/03
Lab: ANA Laboratories

Driving Conditions: Short trips 3-5 miles city driving. Temperatures during this driving period were a
mild 45 degrees F morning temp, 60-75 during the day.

Other: Oil was sampled but not drained and no makeup oil required. This is the first time Mobil 1 was used in this vehicle.
Prior oil was bulk fill 10w30 from Jiffy Lube.

The reason for the early sample was to get a baseline reading since it's the first time I've run this oil or tested this engine. Also I wanted to run the test before running a fuel additive called Fuel Power so I could distinguish between normal wear and anything this additive might do to skew the test.

I have a fumoto valve so I got the engine up to temperature and then drained about 1/2 to 3/4 quart into a glass jar. Then I filled the sample bottle from this jar and then poured the contents back into the crankcase. The glass jar was cleaned with boiling distilled water prior to sampling.

This is the first run with Mobil 1 so it's possible that it's cleaning up the motor some causing elevated levels. Also with so many short trips means lots of cold starts which could contribute to elevated wear. There's an LS1 test where they sample every 1000 miles and the first 1000 miles showed a high level for iron, but then the next 1000 mile interval was only 2ppm higher. So I wouldn't project the ppm/1000 miles until I see another sample on this oil.

I'm thinking of doing an engine cleaning with Auto-rx or Lube Control, but will probably wait until I get close to the end of this drain interval.

The high silicon is probably an additive in the oil, this will deplete with more miles and be replaced with silicon in the form of dirt. It's entirely possible his next interval will show lower silicon.

As to the iron, my 740 mile sample showed 10ppm already. I also noticed in the LS1 long drain test that he saw 10ppm of iron at the 1k interval, but at 3k it was at 14ppm. I do believe a lot of iron content isn't necessarily wear, but corrosion too.

Patman, thanks for reminding me about the silicon being part of the virgin oil. I just looked at my VOA for 10w30 M1 SS and it starts at 11ppm.

Giles,

With that many miles, why not switch over to 10W30? I doubt you'll see much, if any, increase in fuel consumption.

Molakule, I don't feel strong about using 5w30, I just was simplifying by using the same as my newer vehicle. I have a couple 5 qt bottles of 10w30 I will probably use on the next fill. I agree there shouldn't be much change in fuel economy since the 5w30 and 10w30 are almost the same in the Mobil 1 family.
