Just got my Blackstone lab results and was a bit nervous since this was my first oil analysis. The oil was in use for 4.5 months since the middle of October '02. The truck is driven 90% city/10% highway with alot of short trips. Anyway, here are the test results:
code:

Oil filter: Purolator Premium+

Air filter: OEM Isuzu

Miles on oil 2972

Miles on unit 33642

Make up oil (I like to keep it to FULL mark) 0.4qt

Sample Univ. Average

Aluminum: 3 4

Chromium: 2 2

Iron: 5 21

Copper: 7 13

Lead: 0 1

Tin: 2 2

Molybdenum:61 32

Nickel: 0 0

Manganese:0 0

Silver: 0 0

Titanium: 0 0

Potassium: 1 1

Boron: 105 75

Silicon: 7 11

Sodium: 7 10

Calcium:2663 2252

Magnesium:59 270

Phosphorus:769 835

Zinc: 917 1046

Barium: 0 0

SUS Visc., 210F: 59.1

Flashpoint: 370F

Fuel: less than 0.5%

Antifreeze: 0.0%

Water: 0.0%

Insolubles: 0.3%

Any comments would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I got an email from a lube specialist that was really concerned thinking that this analysis was bad due to the spacing when it was posted because the numbers were all jumbled together. To help from this, when trying to space the lines down like this, use the code button
 -
below and it will look just like you print it.
example...

Aluminum: 3 4
Chromium: 2 2
Iron: 5 21
Copper: 7 13

now with code button
code:

Aluminum: 3 4

Chromium: 2 2

Iron: 5 21

Copper: 7 13

Green Max, did you fully drain the oil and refill with new oil on this sample? I would say this oil can go longer, maybe to 7500 miles. -Joe

Thanks for the replies so far. I did drain the oil and filter for two reasons: it was the first oil change since we bought the truck and I wanted to make sure the engine doesn't have any major problems. I am also doing an experiment right now and have replaced the Mobil 1 oil in the Trooper and my Maxima with Havoline and Castrol GTX to compare the wear patterns between the synthetic and dino oils. I have a couple of general questions that perhaps one of the pros could answer. First, if you have a startup noise such as piston slap, would it show on the oil analysis? Second, what engine wear typically shows up and what kind of wear does not show up on the reports? Thanks again.

I also recently posted a UOA form M1 5W-30 SS for an '01 Trooper. Those results were very similar to these.

Craig, thanks for posting. I'm glad to see comparable rates of wear to your Trooper. Hope you enjoy your truck, I love mine!

As far as checking with the Havoline and GTX you probably will not see a big difference-but you have more "reserve" in the M1 for extended drain or when bad things happen.

Thanks for your comments, Al. I have no doubt Mobil 1 is the clear choice if I decide to extend the drain interval. However, both our cars (the Trooper and Nissan Maxima) are driven mostly for short trips in the city and take 4.5-6 months to accumulate 3k miles. I don't feel comfortable keeping any oil past 6 months for fear of fuel dilution and accumulation of contaminants. The other reason is the full garage with Havoline/Chev SL oil for $0.68/qt.

That's a great report. We have seen other good ones with the M1 10W-30. This oil has impressed me lately. Its a step over the 10W-30 Trisynthetic. You should be very happy with the oil and the vehicle. As far as checking with the Havoline and GTX you probably will not see a big difference-but you have more "reserve" in the M1 for extended drain or when bad things happen. Unfortunately we do not have a TBN here but I would guss it's pretty good. You certainly could have gone 7500 miles +. You just cn't do that with the Havoline or GTX.

The only other thing I would point out is I still think there is some risk for seal leakage with a lit of switching between syn and non-syn. That's just an uneducated opinion.

I am not an expert here but unless the piston slap is damaging you won't see it (mainly as lead/iron) in anb analysis. The 10W-30 will not get rid of the 'slap' . Redline may however. Thanks for posting.
