I recently bought some Mobil 1R 0W 30 in the Detroit area at the clearance price of $4.49/ quart (normally sold for $8.00). Going in a SVT Ford Focus. Questions:

Is it basically the same as an extended performance 5W 30? Under the same street applications, would you expect it to "hold up" as long mileage wise (15,000 miles)? If the above answer is no, what about 5000 miles? How about 500 qualifying laps?

It is a strong oil but was not worth the premium price of $8! Their are two formula's of M1R the second version was beefier! I ran the first version of M1R and it held up well for the extreme tourture I put it through! I think it will work nicely in your Ford! It is not M1EP at all. Definately a good score at $4+ some change! If your driveing was 50/50 mix or even better 70/30 I would not think that 15,000 miles would not be out of the question especialy in the warm months! You would have to have a larger sump then a street car has to get 500 laps out of it! If you had a dry sump with a system that held gallons of oil instead of a few quarts and a decent oil cooler then 500 laps would not sound that far fetched!

If you want an oil designed for extended drains use one designed for that like M1EP or Amsoil S3K. If you want a raceing oil then something like Redline or RP Raceing oil might be a better choice now that M1R is being discontinued!

P.S. Rember that these light viscosity oil with low HTHS number gain you HP and the sacrifice of protection under raceing type environment!

John,
I got to disagree with you man! There is no difference between the HTHS of a Mobil 1 R 0W 30 and an extended performance 5W 30. They both are comparable "thin" 30 wts.

For the one VOA I looked up for Mobil 1R had : Moly 104, Phosphorus 2114, Calcium 4160 and Zinc 2333. TBN 11. On paper, she sure is "stout" enough as any extended performance 5W 30, if not more. What else is missing to be able to run it up to 15,000 miles in any type of driving? I am not so sure I am sacrificing anything. Might even have a slight gas mileage gain, when compared to a GC 0W 30.

I still think they are the same oils. Anybody else, including NASCAR's Ryan Newman, feel free to weigh in.

I never said that!! Re-Read my post. The point about HTHS was that some light weight oils (not all) have low HTHS numbers. M1R has an HTHS of 2.9 I belive. M1EP does not even have a data sheet out yet so I do not know how youcould know it's HTHS? Regular M1 5W30 is either HTHS 3 or 3.17 I belive. Not all 0W30 oils have HTHS numbers that low GC HTHS 3.6,XD3 0W30 HTHS 3.6, Redline 5W20 HTHS 3.3, Redline 5W40 HTHS 4.7. If you go with a low HTHS oil you will get more wear especialy under race conditions! This is not an opion it is a fact! You will also get more HP in most cases though in trade for the extra wear! remember I am most especialy talking about race conditions here not daily.

If you think stought is all it takes to go 15,000 miles look at my 3500 mile torture test of this oil under UOA it will be listed under M1R if you search it. It took me 6 months to go 3500 mile dureing this last winter. Compare additive levels after that 3500 miles to VOA. Look at the insolubles. I did say that I thought it would make 15,000 miles under ideal conditions! You need to have a good TBN, great TBN retension, solid HTHS of 3.5 or better(idealy), you need extra solvency. Amsoil the best extended drain oil on the market and their additive package looks anemic compared to M1R. Their is more to oil then just the AW/EP and detergent adds!

P.S. Run it for 500 Laps all out and lets take a look! Run it 15,000 miles and lets take a look! Let UOA be your guide! I know that in my application their is no way M1R could have made it to 15,000 miles!
