I have an 03 Ford Lightning and I am going to be doing my first oil change soon. I would like to use Mobil 1 synthetic but I need 5W-20 and they do not make it. I am told that 0W-20 is what they make for the Fords, Hondas and whatever else. Should I use that or find another 5w-20 synthetic?

I am old fashioned. I would start with the Motorcraft 5w-20 made by ConocoPhillips and use it for the first 10,000 miles. It cost $2.00 quart and has shown well in UOAs.

After that, I would go with Mobil 1 Ow-20.

Rail cars of EXXONSUPERFLO are bing delieverd to the ebgine plant in Brookpark Ohio. Its 5w20 I would go with M 1 0-20. I used that in my Cobra with no problems.

I'd go with the 5W-30, in fact that's what I'm using in my 5.4, 2001 F150. If you look at the spec's, the 5W-30 is more like a thick 5W-20. In this appication and being a V8, a little thicker is better, IMHO.

0w20 is working fine in my honda. Haven't tried the mobil 0w20 in my ford yet. but I've tried the 5w20 havoline/chevron and the motorcraft 5w20. So far it seems to love the havoline, odd thing is the honda hated the havoline. Point is - 0w20 wont hurt your engine. Try it and see if it likes it. every engine is a little different imo.

One thing to remember - just in case something happens, you may want to use the specified oil during the warranty period. If something were to happen with engine during the warranty period, and the dealer found out you were using a non-specified oil - even though you and I know your choice of oil is superior - they may deny your warranty claim and stick you with the bill. Trust me, it is not beneath Ford Motor Company to play this game by having your oil tested to get out of paying the claim!

M1 0w20 meets and exceeds the Ford spec for 5w20. No problems at all using it.

If it were me, I'd probably run the Motorcraft 5w20 for a couple of changes, and then think about switching. Call me old fashioned, but I just like a dino for a bit while breaking the engine in.

Not surprising if another brand of oil is being used at the factory instead of Conoco/Motorcraft. Ford does the same thing with oil filters - the factory filter is different than the same filter number sold over the counter.

I am with "John in the ATL", according to what I have read and what I've heard other people say, it is important to stick with regular oil for 10.000 to let the pistons on the car to break in properly; early switch to synthetic oil may result in not wearing in properly. Castrol (in my opinion) is a good choice, and then Mobil 1.
Here's a good article to read:

(it starts out a bit irrelevan, but read on)

Yes they do make a Mobile 1 5w-20...I run it in my wifes 05 Accord.

Check the date of that original post. Mobil 1 was not available as a 5/20 when this thread was started. Also it looks like 5/20 will replace 0/20 so that 0/20 will soon be unavailable.

It's already replaced the 0W20 here in the Detroit area - I haven't seen the M1 0W20 here in well over four months.
