Excellent for Gears & ATF... I know Castrol also makes a good gear lube.

I prefer Amsoil... Really good results with them.

I ran Mobil 1 gear oil in my 05 Corolla 5 sp transmission for a little over 22k miles and would NOT use it ever again.

Here is the thread --> Thread about Mobil 1 gear lube in Corolla

Its ok in a diff. Personally I would NOT use it as there are MUCH better lubes out there that work better.

As far as their ATF fluid, I've used it but only as a add. Never ran a car on 100% Mobil1 ATF. So no comment there..

Take care, Bill

Cant claim abput the diff lube as a diff lube.

Oils are very subjective, based upon engine and driver use profile.

ATF has been excellent as PSF, but Ive never used it as ATF.

I am looking for good synthetic fluids for my truck as it is due for service and i would like to increase fuel economy and protection. I am assuming synthetic would accomplish this best. What brands perform better than mobil 1?

They stack up very well actually. Read Amsoil's white paper on gear oils.

Hi,
motoman358 - I have used Castrol and Mobil transmission and gear lubricants at 1m km OCIs with great results in Class 8 trucks

I always thought that Castrol made the best gear lubricants around - I was wrong - in my experience they are both on par. This was confirmed by many millions of kms and many UOAs

Amsoil always beats M1 in performance tests.
Redline also beats M1.
Royal Purple is great, I'm not sure how their street oils compare to M1.

Real, third party tests, or their own "testing" ?

I've used M1 ATF in a Borg Warner T5 for a number of years. Smooth shifting, works very well. I've also used it as PSF.

I also used their ATF in the transmission in my '97 Explorer with good results.

Their gear oil is next to impossible to get in Canada, so no experience with it.

My sons 91 Ranger, 5spd, 325,000 miles M1 ATF in tranny, and M1 75-90 gear lube in diff. Never a problem.
My own 96 Merc GM 205,000,M1 ATF in tranny and M1 lube in diff. No probs.

My own "testing"...

I have never had a bad experience with any M1 product, and I used them exclusively for a good 10 years. That includes M1 motor oil, ATF and gear lubes. My truck is currently filled with Mobil 1 ATF and has been for some time, works great.

The only M1 product that I find semi-questionable is their grease, horrible with oil separation. I realize that is desirable in some applications, just not in any of mine.

The only real question with M1, IMO, is if it still worth the cost.

Thats what i was thinking whose "testing" says it is better.

A GL5 gear lube in a manual is a mistake to begin with.

Mobil1 makes excellent products, as does the competition.

It simply comes down to what brand do you want to use?

Sounds like a Toyota problem, not an oil problem.

Tell me more.

Tell me how it is a Toyota problem when the factory fill was ok.

Tell me how it is a Toyota problem that once I drained your companies fluid and refilled it SIXTY THOUSAND miles AGO with a better product it is OPERATING FINE. (ie as it was designed)

Tell me how it is a Toyota problem...

(This should be good...)

You sound offended. Sorry didn't mean to do that. But your problem may have been mechanial in nature. After all it is possible for them to have problems. My experience with a Ford 5 spd. was it shifted some what easier when I put M1 ATF in the tranny verses the FF oil. However that's like comparing apples to oranges.
