Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec (American) better in GM Engines?

I don't know if one was actually "better" than the other, but in my Grand Am with the 3400, M1 5w-30 made my engine noisy...cold start was horrible. But GC made it wayyyy quieter, almost silent at startup, but I'm not sure if regular syntec would do the same....hmmm

I have used both with no problems. I am using Syntec 5w20 now and will most likely stick with it. The UOA I have seen look pretty darn good.

The GM 3.8 is so easy on the oil I'd use whatever dino is on sale.

If you want a synthetic, I'd use M1 10W-30. Syntec really isn't a synthetic except for the price. I wouldn't use it.

Around here, K-Mart has sales on Castrol Syntec pretty often. The price is usually $3.99/qt. For that price, I like Syntec. But if both oils were the same price on the shelf, I would definitely choose M1.

To answer the original question, both of these oils will work fine in a GM engine.

"...The price is usually $3.99/qt. For that price, I like Syntec. But if both oils were the same price on the shelf, I would definitely choose M1." Walmart sells M1 at $19.95 for a 5 qt. jug. That makes it a wash and M1 gets the nod for being a true PAO synthetic.

The whole, 3.1L and 3.4L Engine Series needs Jack Kervorkian and not a better oil...

It's time to put those engines down.

The 3.8L is an excellent motor and will run for 250k-350k trouble free miles on any oil....
