Mobil 1 or Amsoil for my Lexus?

I have a '99 Lexus GS400 with a 4.0 liter V8. 68k miles. I live in the Northeast and see some seriously cold weather, though I don't use the car too much in the winter due to the 300hp and rear wheel drive combo

.
I started using Amsoil S2000 0W30 for a couple of oil changes, then tried Mobil 1. I've always used Mobil 1 oil filters. Regardless of what Amsoil and Mobil 1 say about extended drain intervals, I plan to change the oil at 7500 miles or less.
I had been really getting into the Amsoil products until they told me they don't make their foam air filter for my car and don't plan to. All that bragging about how great their air filters are for my car, then they don't make one!!

I guess my question is whether or not Amsoil is worth the extra cost and shipping charges when I don't plan to go beyond 7500 miles on the oil?
Mobil 1 seems to be pretty good with these Toyota engines from reading otehr posts here. I plan to see this car past 250,000 miles, so whatever is best is what I want to do, hence the 7500 mile oil changes.

Thoughts?

The Amsoil would be a better deal if you ran the regular 5W30 instead of the high priced 0W30. Mobil 1 is a very good choice as well and either would work well for you. My choice would be for the Amsoil 5W30.

You're probably right, but I guess I'm just peeved with Amsoil for not having a two stage foam air filter application for my car. Its not like I'm driving a '77 Maserati or anything!

I went with the 0 weight oil from both Amsoil and Mobil for winter use as it seems like one of the most important factors for engine protection is how fast you get oil up in the engine. I use the 5W30 for the warmer 6 months each year. I've never had a consumption problem with either oil.

I would use Mobil 1 without hesitation. Mobil 1 does extremely well in Toyotas and holds it's viscosity better IMO. Amsoil would work fine too but you would not be gaining anything.

I guess it will be Mobil 1 for good then.

I know there might be better oils out there, but seems as though marginally so----though I guess some on this board could debate that until the cows come home.
The problem I see with both the Amsoil and GC is extra time and expense to get them. I can get a "quickie" oil change at a local shop with the Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 oil filter for $42. I do that twice a year and seems as though I'm all set.

One last question, do any of you feel it is REALLY necessary to use Auto RX in an engine that has always had synthetic oil and frequent changes? From what little I can see with a bore light, the top part of my engine looks like surgical stainless steel (or a Mobil 1 advertisement). Does everyone alwys get some degree of "gunk" out of an engine by using Auto Rx, or could my engine be a s clean as it seems and not need a treatment of Auto Rx?

To be completely honest, you'd probably have a very clean engine in a situation like that, but it wouldn't hurt to run Auto-rx in it every 100k just to be 100% sure. Those running dino oil would want to do Auto-rx treatments more frequently (every 50k)

My wifes 98 Stratus ES 2.5L has had Mobile1 10W-30 or 5W-30 every 7500 or so since we got it. Even so, under the cap isn't as beautifully clean as I would like, so I ordered some AutoRX for it at 82,000 miles. There is pretty good visibility through the cap (unlike my 05 Rolla).

Sure it was clean...but why settle for good enough?

The only reason I use Amsoil over M1 is because amsoils are on the thick side of a 30wt and M1 is on the thin side. All the vehicles I have now like the slightly thicker oil. Amsoil seems to turn up slightly better iron numbers but it tends to thicken after 5k miles.

I would not be concerned or irritated that Amsoil does not make an air filter for your engine. My experience, as well as others on here note that the OEM air filters actually provide better filtration then the foam filters.

Assuming you do not need an oil heater then any of the 0W oils will work. the Amsoil has worked for me With very cold climate, short trips your OCI seems reasonable.

I drive the #1 selling pickup in the USA, and since 1997 they didn't have a filter until this year. BTW the filter is the same as the mustang, too. That is a lot of cars!!!

Win Dixie, It will not matter wich brand you use. That engine is rather gentle on the oil. Either will work fine. I belive we have a Lexus UOA useing 5W30 Valvoline and it looked great. Personely I would use M1 due to cost to perfomance ratio. I do not think you will gain anything in this engine by spending more on your oil then the price of M1!

If you look at the Toyota Truck 4.7 V8 UOA results you can see what I am talking about. The truck V8 is loosely based on the Lexus V8's. It lacks the fancy head you have and the titanium rods and has a cast iron block. You engine is even better.

I think I would take a close look at M1 0W40 and Delvac-1 5W40 if you want a recomendation.

i went from M1 to Amsoil and noticed 3 things. Smoother idle, quiter idle, and easier reving. You may think this is the placebo affect, but i also noticed the vacum guage was reading a higher number at idle.

Hope that helps.

P.S. car is an 04 WRX using 20-50

In this engine, I highly doubt you'll see a difference between the two oils. Other engines, you might see more of a difference depending on the viscosity and oil your using. Mobil 1 does excellent in Toyota's.
