Its been over 2k miles now on my switch from dino to Mobil 1 10W30.The oil is starting to look dirty,so,I guess that means its cleaning the inside of my engine, correct? At 1k miles I checked the oil and it was down about 1/3 a quart.Since then the oil level has stayed the same.I'm going to change the oil in another 1k miles.Any opinions on what ive posted?

What your experiencing is what normally happens. My car used .25/qt when going from dino to M1 EP. Hasn't used a drop since. 3k miles on the oil. Oil is cleaning up most likely or reacting chemically and turning darker. Why are you going to change M1 with only 4k miles on it?

I read a few responses to my earlier post' about my switch to Mobil 1 and they suggested to change it at 3k miles then go to longer oci after that. So,I should leave it in there longer?

I'd at least go 5k, then you could go longer. Let the oil work it's way in/clean etc. Then you'll be good to go. Is it the EP stuff or regular?

Just my observations.
I was using Mobil 1 0w40 for the past 18,000 miles or so with oci/filter change every 4,000 or so. The oil got very dark within 2,000 miles.

I switched to Mobil 1 5w40 truck and suv and the oil appears to be staying much cleaner/lighter at 2,300 miles. Not sure why. perhaps I am seeing the effect/benefits of gentle cleaning of the engine by the 0w40.

BTW, no seal leaks or oil buring/usage after switching from dino oil.

I use Mobil 1 10w30 in my 2.5L Subaru. At 90,000 miles I had Blackstone do a UOA. Resultes so good they recomended going out to 7,000 mile oil change while I had been doing a 5,000 mile change. 3-4,000 miles oil change is a waste of money unless your pulling heavy trailer in the desert or mountains.

Yes, while it is completely logical that the longer the oil is doing its job, the dirtier it gets, it is really NOT a true indication of what is happening chemically. I think that if it makes you feel better, yes go ahead and change the oil at whatever visual dirtiness OCI that makes you comfortable. However for a true look, the oil analysis is a truer "read em and weep" source.

So for example, I have been doing and will continue to do 15,000 mile OCI's with Mobil One 5w30. for app 694,000 miles. I also am working on a 25,000 mile oci with Mobil One 5w40 Truck and SUV. In the TDI application for example I can change the oil and IMMEDIATELY after the new oil change the oil is absolutely BLACK.

Wow, 15K changes with M1 5W30 and your at 694K! What car is this? Do you run bypass filter(s)? How often do ya change the regular (full flow) filter in that 15K? I started using M1 5W30 (8k oci) in my '99 Ford ZX2 after I broke it in on dino and have no complaints.

You can't judge the quality of an oil by color from my experience. Different cars and different oils darken at varioius rates. Some if it is cleaning and some of it is chemical reaction. Only one way to tell and that is a used oil analysis sample.

Buster has a good point, as many times M1 gets darker due to chemical reaction in the presence of heat. And I think this varies from engine to engine.

The darker color is not solely an indication of the amount of contaminants or insoluables absorbed by the detergent/disperant additives.
