Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-30
69.2 cSt @ 40 *C
11.7 cSt @ 100 *C

Mobil Super 5000 High Mileage 10W-30
66.3 cSt @ 40 *C
10.4 cSt @ 100 *C

Yes I double checked and triple checked the product data sheets.

This might be my ticket to running a 5W-30 and not worry about it being too thin.

Its like that for a lot of oils out there. I always laugh when people say im gonna run 10w30 cause its "a little thicker" It Not! A little more shear stable is all.

You're forgetting to look at the VI and HTHS, those are very important when determining which oil is thicker.

I always wondered if Mobil 1 HM 5W30 or 10W30 was more like a 40 weight oil...

I also have heard that Mobil 1 HM 10W40 is close to a 50 weight oil. Not sure if any of this is true.

No the HTHS on the 10w30 is higher, 3.5 IIRC versus about 3.3 for the 5w30. HTHS is a much better indicator of actual thickness than kinematic viscosity. Both are thick for grade though, a good quality in a HM oil IMO.

Why are you posting here then?

M1 HM 10w-30 is not a 40 wt. It is a thick 30 wt, but still in the viscosity range of a 30 wt oil.

So am I looking for a high HTHS number and a high VI number?

I have said before more than once there is NO real difference between 5-30 and 10-30.

Maybe one day folks will begin to realize this!

Oh gosh another post Nazi. He prob posted here because he wanted to.

Mobil Super HM is a RC SN/GF-5 oil. It is a synthetic blend with added detergency and seal conditioners. Others, like Maxlife followed their model.
M1 HM is an SL rated oil with added viscosity, anti-wear agents, and detergency.

Mobil Super 5000 HM is a synthetic blend? Really?

I am surprised more people aren't using MSHM. It performed great in my Cherokee. I was very pleased. If I didn't get such a blockbuster deal on PEAK 10w40 ($18 for 31.68 quarts at AZ)I would still be running it.

Definitely on my "must try" list but I haven't gotten to it yet. Everything on here I've seen on it has been positive.

Fortunately most do realize that the 10W-30 grade is usually heavier than a 5W-30 and looking up the PDS is the way to confirm it.

As has been pointed out by members in the know, M1 HM 10W-30 is considerably heavier for two reasons, a 0.2cP higher HTHSV and a 16 point lower VI. There is also the possibility that the 5W-30 may be somewhat more shear prone that could further increase the viscosity difference between the two oils in service.

Would I recommend M1 HM 10W-30 if your need a heavier oil than M1 HM 5W-30? No it's an obsolete grade, it would be better to blend in some MI HM 10W-40 to get whatever final HTHSV you want. This way your VI will at least stay above 160.
Or better still blend in M1 0W-40 instead and have a final VI over 170.
