Since we know that the vanilla Mobil 1 is a mostly (if not fully) Group III oil, chances are that the Mobil 1 Extended Performance has some Group V or perhaps both Group IV and V in it. Perhaps someone can do a smell test to see if any Group V alkylated naphthalene is in it. If it has Group V ester, there would be no unusual odor. Group V base oils increase the oil's lubricity and/or pressure - viscosity coefficient a lot and this would result in better lubrication of the valvetrain by the Mobil 1 Extended Performance in comparison to the vanilla Mobil 1.


With my experience and that of several friends and family, I have never known of any engine that had any wear problems much less in the valve train area. Many of these do OCIs from 10K to 20K with reg Mobil 1 oils.
