Mobil 1 Extended Oil now 20k miles

I was at Walmart and noticed new(ish?) Branding on m1 EP. Did everyone know it was now 20k miles? I guess that also plays into why they discontinued AP. I did always wonder why their extended filters went to 20k but their extended oil did not. Well, they are consolidated.

Regular M1 vs. M1 EP ?

Other than a lower price - is there any cleaning or performance benefit(s) to using regular (i.e. Vanilla) M1 vs. M1 EP - or does M1 EP simply provide longer protection due to additives and esters ?

There has been a lot of discussion here about this. It goes back to when AP was introduced. It fit a small niche of consumers who drive a lot of miles. The price point was a negative. For far less $$, one can buy EP. Eventually Mobil saw the light as sales of AP were dismal so they dropped it and upgraded EP to the 20k standard.

The reality though is that only a small minority of users will run EP 20k or even 15k. The oil may last that long under ideal conditions but will your engine or owners manual allow it?

20k on a turbo GDI engine? Probably not.

I doubt that anyone will know and Exxon Mobil keeps those kind of things close to the vest.
