Mobil 1 European Car Formula 5W50 in a Silverado

Just want to experiment on my 2007 Silverado 6.0L 210,000 mile truck. Used 10W40 the last oil change 2 years ago after coming off 5W30. With 5W30 at 1700 rpm cruising oil gauge was at 30 psi and downshifting to 2700 was not much better. Hot idle was 20 psi. which is fine.

Going thicker may not help if using 10w40 didn’t do much. Diminishing returns maybe?

If going from a 30 to a 40 raised pressure by 3 psi, won't going to a 50 weight take it up another 3 psi? Or it's not a linear progression?

There's often a bigger viscosity gap going from a 40 to a 50 than going from a 30 to a 40.

Why are you trying to increase the pressure? That's the first question.

Also, is this one of the LSx engines that are prone to developing a leak at the pick-up tube? @clinebarger knows the details on that far better than I do, but I recall some discussion around LSx oil pressure and this was a common problem.

Are you relying on the "Oil Pressure gauge" that's on the instrument cluster or have you installed an actual mechanical gauge somewhere.

I've already checked with a mechanical gauge and replaced the sender.

Get down with the thiccness.

Depending on which 5W-30 and 10W-40 you were using, there may not have been too much of a difference in KV at operating temp.

A Chev V-8 with 210k miles will probably love a 50-weight oil, I think it’s a great idea.
