As you can see from my signature I have 4 vehicles I service. My two trucks, wifes Jetta and sons Mazda. Canyon calls for 5w30, all others 0w20.

2022 GMC Canyon High Elevation 3.6L
2023 Mazda3 2.5L Skyactive
2021 Chevy Silverado RST 5.3
2020 Jetta 1.4L R-Line

I could make OC's a little simpler by just using one oil across the board. I like Mobil 1 EP because it has a little more group IV base oils than others.

The Jetta calls for vw 508.00 0w20 but at the M1 EP formulation seems to be very similar to the ESP line from my reading here.

I'm considering just using M1 EP 5w-30 across the board. I like a little more viscosity. I live in Eastern NC, summers can be brutal, winters not so much. What do you guys think?

Perfectly fine IMO. I was trying to find more on the VW 508 spec. Per LZ, HT/HS >2.6, SA <1.0, Min TBN >6.0. Mobil 1 EP will satisfy all of them.

I was briefly looking at the Afton table of VW 507. Not as stringent as some think although it is a older spec. Noack can be as high as 11-13% for that spec. Not sure about 508.

0W-20 M1 EP, 5w30 M1 EP, M1 ESP 5w30 all meet the requirements of API SP
0w-20 M1 ESP X2 (WV508.00) states meets or exceeds the requirements of API SP ENGINE TEST REQUIREMENTS

There was a poster here who said something along the lines of the ESP may be a tad more sheer stable, and the EP may have an edge with extended drain intervals.

A VOA of the EP and ESP of the same grade would be interesting. If I had to guess, I'd say very similar formulations.

Are there engine tests for VW 504 and 508?

I think your vehicles will be perfectly fine.
Especially if you don't exceed 5k OCI's
I'll prob stretch that a little because of the EP formula.

Once a year for the Silverado. Probably doesn't see 3k miles a year. Hauls a small travel trailer.

Canyon and VW as long as I don't go over a year, I'll prob shoot for 6k - 7k.

The Mazda will see the longest OCI. It does about 600 miles a week. 3 months would be 7,800 miles but those are mostly all highway.

Grade for grade, the ESP oils tend to be more shear stable but not quite as long drain capable as the EP IMO. Mobil boosts the AO levels for the EP line for the extended drain. ESP 5w30 is more shear stable than Mobil 1 EP 5w30 and may offer better wear protection being the HT/HS is 3.53.

The 5w30 Pro-Ds is what I currently run in the Canyon. It comes in the 6 quart box which is the qty that engine calls for.

It's good stuff and the price is good too.
I was looking at your typical weather patterns and it looks like you don’t need 5W cold start protection.
The new Havoline “lifelong” 10w30 looks like an awesome product with a very high flashpoint of 260C. That I believe suggests a very low noack number.
I might try it in a 2022 3.6L Acadia which has the same LGX engine as your Canyon.
Whether or not you move up to an XW 30 in your 0w20 engines is up to you.
I would, but Userfriendly is what Userfriendly does.

ESP carries more total (stringent) approvals than 2 or 3 other formulas/brands put together - that’s allot of OEM “fans” …
That sounds like a lot of licensing fees, but you can’t tell a book by its cover, so Havoline conducted the Las Vegas taxi challenge and beat the competition.

Oh, so you imply that they just need to fill out paperwork …
Taxi’s have been used for PoP testing for decades …
