I have a high mileage Civic (close to 200k). I changed over to Mobil 1 from a pure dino diet from new. Ever since about 120k for the first few minutes of running there was a clattery sound under the hood at 2500RPM+ and under 35F. I know people have reported the opposite with Mobil 1 but in my case 20F this morning and no noise even at startup and up to 3000RPM on a stone cold motor. Maybe its filter helping, which btw is a Fram installed by Walmart Lube Express unknowing to me until I peeked under and saw orange.

My experience matches yours, much quieter startups in cold weather with Mobile 1 (0w-40). I use a high flow filter (SuperTech).

Possible your Fram is in bypass at startup or even stuck. Though some claim Fram is a high Flow filter. I have no experience with Fram filters.

Guess you witnessed 80k worth of cleaning...hopefully you're rid of the dreaded cold lifter knock once and for all.

I too notice my Accord engine runs smoother or quieter with Mobil-1 but I attribute that fact due to running a bit thicker oil than whats recommended. 0w40 as opposed to 0w30.

I'm going to change the oil in my new CRV this coming weekend with the new 0w30R and I'm anxious to see how that does for it too. (as opposed to the recommended 0w20)

rjundi, I had a '95 Civic with over 100,000 miles on it and Bogatyr has had similar high-mileage Hondas.

Not sure why it is, but with Mobil 1 but these cars all make an awful racket in the cold at start-up.

The condition is called "piston slap" and it is a deformation of the piston ... especially around the skirt area. There is some play in this area and the engine makes a knocking sound until the engine warms, parts expand with heat and the play disappears.

Try doing a search using the term "piston slap" in all forums on this site. Pertinent reading for you and your car's motor.

My advice? Switch to an oil with a lot of moly. Red Line will quiet down that car considerably as will Schaeffer and Pennzoil High-Mileage Vehicle.

What did you use prior to Mobil 1?

Mobil 1 actually makes most engines sound better, except in cold weather. It's a thin oil to start, so this is why it's louder. Using a 50wt will silence your engine but do nothing else for you.

The car is quieter with Mobil 1 in my case on cold mornings now. The car before Mobil 1 probably half Valvoline 5W30 and half Castrol GTX every 3-4k miles.

I experienced more engine noise with Mobil 1 and this was cold and hot. I think this oil was just too thin for the V-8 in my truck.

I too noticed more engine noise with M1, but I'm glad it's working for you alright.
