I have a Dodge 4.7 that has used mostly Mobil 1. Around 60k I noticed a leak around the front of the oil pan. I'm assuming it's motor oil and not a transmission line. I just changed to Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w-30 to see if it makes any difference. Has anyone else had leaks with PAO-based oils or is it just time for mine to start leaking regardless?

I started my new Volvo 2.3L Turbo Engine on M1 10W30. Not one leak or loss through the tail pipe yet at 37K miles. Could it be a nut or two may need tightened on the pan? If some had come loose don't crush the gasket just snug them up. Gaskets and seals do deteriorate over time usually with the synthetics it takes a little longer than with the mineral oils. If the engine was run on mineral oil for a period of time then switched to a synthetic the possibility of a leak does increase. My Manual transmission was filled with regular transmission fluid for over 200K miles and I switched to Redline MTL last year. It is now leaking like a screen door on submarine. 1/2 quart every 5k miles. New seals are going in all around on Thursday.

The problem is not the oil, its the quality of the vehicle. If its the oil causing the leak, why is it only leaking on this one area and not everyplace? Use common sense, engine oil leaks is one of them most common things. Go to any large parking lot and what do you see everywhere? Oil that has leaked from vehicles.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not under any warranty program. It doesn't leave puddles but the entire lower front of the engine is wet. I would assume the fan makes it appear worse than it may be.

According to what I have been able to find out when Mobil 1 was first introduced there were some problems with the oil and some problems with seal leakage. Many cars and trucks in existence at that time had seals that were incompatible with the new synthetic oil. Today, the majority of all cars and trucks have seals that are compatible with synthetic oil, and Mobil 1 has been vastly improved over the original oil.

In addition, if a vehicle has damaged seals there is going to be seal leakage regardless if you use conventional or synthetic oil. The synthetic in such a vehicle might leak faster because the synthetic might flow better then the conventional motor oil.
