12 months in service. Almost entirely highway driving. Temperatures ranged from 0F - 100F. Summer driving included hauling a 2500# trailer over mountain passes. Oil Filter: Fram Endurance. In: PUP 5W-30, Boss oil filter. Air filter: Purolator PureOne.

M1 AFE is the only 0W-30 oil available in the US that claims to meet or exceed Ford’s WSS-M2C963-A1 Spec. ESP does not.
Review here, A1 is literally API SP. Nothing special. Also, Ford doesn’t have any 0w30 and the A1 appears to only apply to the 5w30, so technically, AFE can claim to meet or exceed the A1 spec along with any other 0w or 5w30 that meets API SP and ILSAC GF-6, but if you want to split hairs… it doesn’t meet what Ford actually specified.

This is like oil companies who waste money by getting 5w20 oils onto the dexos approval list… GM does not make any vehicles that recommend a 5w20, only a 0w20, so there’s literally zero need for a 5w20 dexos oil.

Good report. I’ve put 40k miles in 2 ecoboosts on the AFE 0W-30 too, for the same reasons regarding the Ford Spec before I came to BITOG. It doesn’t seem to stay in grade but that doesn’t seem to matter too much for wear in normal use? One more AFE UOA soon then I’m switching, probably both engines to HPL plus 0W-30. It will be interesting to me to see if the HPL stays in grade given it has about the same virgin viscosity. My 2.7’s are showing ~3% fuel dilution.
 
Not bad but not great. No real reason to use afe 0w-30 when esp 0w-30 is the same price. But this oil oiled I guess but I wouldn't buy it again.

It's a weak spec. If you're out of warranty there is zero reason to care about it.

Agree with the others, I was thinking AFE in this Expedition?. That product is positioned for "Fuel Savings". I always imagine this product being used in a Prius or some sort of fuel sipper car to squeeze out any more MPG. You'd see a bigger difference in that type of application. At any rate the results look good on here. Keep running it if you'd like. Just know that plenty of other synthetic products will net you good fuel savings as well but have a better HT/HS spec.
 
Some facts about the Ford spec: Per Ford Expedition manuals, WSS-M2C953-A1 (superseded by WSS-M2C945-A or WSS-M2C963-A1) is now required (as of 2022) for temperatures <= -20F. 0W30 meeting WSS-M2C953-A1 was first recommended for cold weather by Ford in 2017, although in the US market no oil company met their specification until 2021 when M1 did with their updated SP version of M1 AFE 0W30, at which point oils meeting the spec became a Ford requirement for <= -20F, and a recommendation for <= -4F when operating over 7500’ altitude.

But just to be clear, per your owner's manual all of those are recommendations, not requirements.
 
I am unaware of any published HTHS spec for the SP version of M1 AFE 0W-30. I would love to see it if you have it.
Yeah, I don't know for certain on the AFE but I do know that it's a fuel savings product and in a 30 grade is most likely anywhere from >2.6 to <3.2 HTHS. I suppose what we are mostly saying is that you can get at least a 3.5 HTHS in a Euro product but no worries. That is your choice. Thanks

Good results for an Ecoboost; they usually shed a lot more metal.
Mine has been right around 1.8-2.0ppm Fe/1k but it’s tuned and running E30. OP’s is right at 1.6ppm/1k which is very similar, so I’d say he’s right where he should be. I’d have no issues running that oil another 6.5k or so, but I’d definitely keep an eye on viscosity since it’s very close to dropping out of grade.
 
Yes, at the end of the day, despite the fact that the oil snobs here (including me) don't particularly care for AFE 0W-30, your results are perfectly good.
I've never seen a bad report with AFE 0W30. It seems to work well, last long, and the viscosity loss seems unique to each car. It's almost as if it adjusts its own viscosity to each vehicle's ideal. LOL.

Engines and operating conditions are different in the amount of fuel they dilute into the oil, or cause actual mechanical shear of the VM. Usually it’s fuel. Plus the fact that most UOA on here are Blackstone and they are incapable of discriminating between the two. We have also seen issues with their viscosity measurements.
