Might have been posted before, but the MSDS for Mobil 1 0W30, with a product number that is the same as the product number for USA Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0W30, on file in Korea indicates that it is 70 - 80% PAO (cas # 68649-12-7), with remainder of content being trade secret.

With the $22 Wal Mart pricing on 5 qt jugs and $10 rebate promo from XOM, it makes it quite the buy.

Have you, per chance, seen the data for the 0w-20?

G-Man, IIRC, a few years back posted some good information (patent documents, I think) that set forth some detail about the makeup of various M1 products. The intriguing one, to me anyway, was the 0w-40. It appeared that given the ambitious nature of this oil, EM had to use some pretty advanced technology to make it work. PAO and esters are the backbone of that product.

So 1-DECENE, TETRAMER AND TRIMER HYDROGENATED is the formal chemical name for PAO?

Can we be certain we get the same formula here?

The last PAO CAS# I had was 68037-01-4 from lubriplate grease ( 1-decene homopolymer C10H20 and there are quite few of 'em(CAS#). The last time I saw a typical grp-III, the CAS# was: 64742-54-7. I think Shell ultra slack wax process is in the 9xxxxx_ range.

I thought Mercon V didn't even have to be completely synthetic?

I don't do chem-speak, but that string appears in many of the Chevron PAO base stocks on page 10 here. Interesting document.
