A couple months ago, I posted how this MB 229.51 spec oil had seemingly significantly increased the mpg on our '05 MB e320 cdi to the tune of 3-4mpg over the original 229.5 spec 0w40, but this was concluded over only the first few tanks of fuel.

Now that I have calculated mileage over the last several thousand miles, I am more confident in posting the results. We previously got a consistent 32.9-34.1 mpg per tank (mixed city/highway) with the 0w40, and with identical driving habits, are now seeing well in excess of 35mpg with the 5w40 ESP (35.9 to be exact over the last 5k+ miles of mixed city/highway). We are even seeing in excess of 40mpg on occasion for highway driving, which had never been seen in the previous 100k+ miles.

Anyone else tried this oil in a car that doesn't require it from the factory?

It doesn't make sense than any 40wt oil could show such a significant mileage increase over a premium synthetic oil like M1 0w40, but this most definitely appears to be happening in our case.

40wt is a broad range. What is the visco of each oil at 100C and what's the HT/HS of each?

FWIW, M1 ESP 5w40 is probably a more "premium" oil than M1 0w40.

There is at least one TDI Club member using Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40 in his 2005 Passat TDI. It is better than the 505.01-spec oils and about the same as the Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30 that meets VW 507.00. (And that stuff is really hard to find, the Formula M is available at MB and Dodge dealerships.)

It's available from the MB dealer for around $7/qt

Here are the specs of the two:

Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 isn't that hard to find. It's available from any Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep or Freightliner dealer. It is listed as Part No. 68001334AA. It is the specified oil for the 3.0L CRD (WK) and Sprinter 3.0L OM642 (VB) Mercedes-Benz diesel engines. I pick it up for a little over $6 a liter.

The 5w30 stuff is available at Chrysler and Jeep dealers? I thought that was the 5w40 version (Formula M).

I believe Formula M is specifically intended for MB vehicles, not necessarily all Mercedes-engined vehicles. According the the ESP 5w30 PDS, it looks to be a very high-quality oil as well with specs that aren't too far off from the 5w40 FM.

I encourage others with diesel vehicles to give this oil a try to see if you notice any change to MPG. At around $7/qt from an MB dealer, it doesn't cost much more than other GRP IV-based (Mobil 1, GC, etc...)

Yep, it's just like I listed. As for the Formula M, Mopar doesn't catalog it as one of its maintenance products.

The only 5W-40 product listed in the Mopar catalog is Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck.

So the Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5w40 is only at MB dealers?

It is available from other sources as well. There are on-line suppliers such as AV Lubricants.

Are you sure you're not confusing the "Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30" and the "Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40"? The ESP Formula 5W-30 is the only ESP Formula used in Chrysler LLC vehicles. The ESP Formula M 5W-40 product is specified for certain Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

The current Mobil 1 approvals and factory fills for Chrysler LLC vehicles are as follows...

5W-40 Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck: Approved for 5.9L Cummins turbo diesel.
5W-30 Mobil 1 ESP Formula: Approved for 3.0L CRD (WK) and Sprinter 3.0L OM642 (VB).
0W-40 Mobil 1 European Formula: Factory Fill for SRT8 6.1L, SRT10 8.3L & 8.4L, Crossfire & SRT6, and 2.8L diesel (KJ).
10W-30 Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic: Factory Fill for 1997-2005 Viper 8.0L.

Mopar also offers these products as options for dealers and their customers...

15W-50 Mobil 1
5W-20 Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic
5W-30 Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic

The other oils Chrysler LLC dealers offer are Mopar MaxPro products, those being...

5W-20 API SM/GF-4
5W-30 API SM/GF-4
10W-30 API SM/GF-4:
Approved for use with pre-2004 turbocharged engines.
15W-40 API CJ-4/CI-4+: 6700 CJ-4 rated oil for low emissions 6.7L Cummins turbo diesel engine. Approved for older 5.9L Cummins diesel.
15W-40 HD+ API SJ/CI-4+; Recommended for 5.9L Cummins turbo diesel and Sprinter diesel (2006 & prior) w/o diesel particulate filter.

Their other engine oil product makes me laugh...

Mopar Diesel Fresh™: Formulated with premium quality 15W-40 CI-4 diesel oil and a proprietary lemon odorant. This oil additive helps neutralize the naturally occurring unpleasant odor of diesel engine oil.
