Looks like good stuff, I wonder why it is MB 229.3 rather than the more stringent 229.5?

Last I heard, you can't get this in the states. That may have changed, though.

Different from the M1 5w40 sold in the US, too. Lower viscosity, higher TBN, more sulfated ash -- I'm not sure what's the point?

The formula M meets 229.51, the German M1 5w40 only meets 229.3 -- so probably not identical.
