Hello,

I own a Volvo S60, 2.4i, 170hp from 2003 and I want to change my oil. I decided to try a M1 5-30. The only issue is the content of zinc and phosphorus which is around 0,08. I know that this is a common problem for almost all the new engine oils.
Volvo recommends "Castrol for Volvo" which has a quite strong additive pack (zinc/phosphorus - 0,11/0,10). However I want to stick with this M1 and in order to enhance to protection package I think to mix the oil with the engine break-in additive fron Redline.

I do not know if this is a good practice. That's why I ask for some opinions regarding this matter.

Thank you

A low-performance / low stress modern engine such as a 170 horsepower 2.4L should have no problem with M1 5w30 at 800 PPM Zinc/phosphorous. No reason to play chemist, IMO. let the oil do its job. I believe that if you were to use M1 5w30 EP (extended performance) it would have a slightly higher dosage of additives, so you might consider that for peace of mind. Or find "German" Castrol (Syntec 0w30, the label will say made in Germany) if you prefer- its very common still.

I will try the M1 5-30 without the RL additive. Before I used PetroCanada Supreme Synthetic 5w30. I know the High mileage variant of M1 unfortunately I am not able to find here in Romania. I will speak with my dealer probably he will get this in future.
Regarding the Castrol oil specially developed for Volvo it costs around 22$ /quart. It's quite an expensive one but these are the prices in Europe

. As my car is more a weekend car, 80% percent of mileage is highway, in my opinion does not worth to spend the money on this stuff.

The RL additive is just the ticket to raise ZDDP. Give Dave at RL a call and he'll give you an idea of how much to add. Usually 1 ounce/qt of oil is a good starting point.

According to my calculation 1 oz of RL additive adds 570 ppm P and 690 Zn per quart. In my opinion 1100 ppm (oil+additive) for each component, Zn and P, is more than enough. Therefore I should add maximum 1 oz additive /2 qts of oil.

If you can get the RL additive it is certainly worth considering.

I always recommend adding no more than 1 ounce per quart to an API SM/SN lubricant.

I agree, and its API SL formulation will have a higher concentration of ZDDP.

I disagree.
Regular M1 5w30 is lighter, HTHS 3.14cP vs 3.4cP for HM and has a higher VI (170 vs 162).
Now if you want a heavier oil with a HTHS vis of 3.4cP then simply make a 50/50 blend of M1 AFE 0w30 and 0W-40 and you'll end up with a heavy 0w30 with a VI of 182; a far superior product to the HM 5w30.

I have found this chart helpful when it comes to Red Line break-in oil additive

I like the idea of this blend above^^^, cool suggestion!
