VOA for mix used for 45049-50049 interval above - this mix should be same. 55805 Mobil-1 (4 Qts.) 5W-30 EP + (1 Qt.) 15W-50 EP changed out with Mobil-1 5w-30 EP and Motorcraft FL-820S oil filter. 61381 Mobil-1 5W-30 EP changed out with Mobil-1 5W-30 EP and Mobil-1 M1-210 Extended Performance oil filter. Air filter also changed with Baldwin unit. 66382 Mobil-1 5W-30 EP changed out with Mobil-1 5W-30 EP and Motorcraft FL-820S filter. Fuel filter changed and FP60 started approx. 1300 miles (67,700) into this new interval. 71397 Mobil-1 5W-30 EP changed out with Mobil-1 5W-30 EP and Motorcraft FL-820S filter. FP60 use continued as it reduces wheezing sound of engine at higher RPM's. Results:

Blackstone Comments: Everything continues to look good in the latest sample from your Ford. All wear held steady and we see nothing that would show a mechanical problem developing. The particle count was clean, with an ISO Cleanliness Code of 14/14/11. This is better than the 26/25/22 we found last sample. The TBN read at 4.3, which is a little lower than the 5.8 we read last time. We consider 1.0 or less to be too low. No fuel dilution or anti-freeze contamination was found. At 71,397 total miles, we think this engine is doing just fine. Try 7,000 miles on the next oil. My comments: First note is that my driving patern changed from what I've been doing the past year, to very short trips (<2 or 3 miles) in the morning and at night. The truck temperature guage - which is coolant temp, not oil temp - is just starting to get up into the middle of the Normal range when I go to shut it off at the train station. To take this sample, I actually went out on a little long drive down the highway and back so I could run the rest of the miles to get it to 5,000, and get it definitely hot enough. I'm contributing this short trip driving to the reduction in flash, and also TBN. I don't know why though on this run the add level are so much lower. I'm wondering if we're seeing Mobil tune the EP line (or, at least the 5W-30 EP) because if you look at the trend of Ca, P, and Zn, you can easily see that on the same vehicle, in almost the same driving conditions, the add levels are going down. I don't think I looked at the 5 Qt. jug of Walmart Mobil-1 5W-30 EP for this UOA (or if I did I don't remember doing it), so I don't know if it was the SM rumored Mobil-1 EP or not. The 5 Qt. jug of Walmart Mobil-1 5W-30 EP I used for this past run I did look at, and it was labeled SL and nowhere on it had ILSAC GF-4. Then again, I remember when regular Mobil-1 was going from SL to SM, I was looking and cleary I was getting SM Mobil-1 for my 30k and 35k UOA's, and that's why I labeled them as such. Perhaps that's what I've got here...SL labeled Mobil-1 EP but really what's in the bottle is SM. Who knows... As far as running the FP60 - I like it. I didn't really notice much bump in gas mileage, however, the reduction it makes in engine raspiness is alone worth it IMHO. I'm using my last 12 oz. up and I'm debating whether to order more or not...I think I will, as with the mileage I'm now driving - and it'll get even less probably as I'll get a bike to go back and forth to work as the whether gets a little nicer - it ought to last for a long while. As far as the particle count, the people debating those numbers out to have a good one - or at least, the people that really like the Mobil-1 EP filters. Because, looking purely at my results above and assuming all else being equal (which I know we can't do, but still), what is shown above is that the Motorcraft filters are like worlds above better at filtration than the Mobil-1 EP filters....and I don't think I've seen anyone making that argument. Let the games begin on this one... Chuck

Great information. If EP costs more than 5 cents extra its not worth even that considering your 5K mile oil change. Great post.

Could it be that m1 for its known higher iron readings, would be the cause for all the engine noises that people have been talking about? Just assuming contemplating here [Confused]

This looks like the additive package of the regular Mobil 1 and not the EP. The end of test viscosity also looks like the GF-4 rated stuff. Not that it really matters if you're only running 5000 miles between changes. All this data supports 10k-12k changes under these conditions.

The newest Mobil 1 EP formulation is SM/GF-4 rated, so seeing this additive package is not a surprise.

Daayuumn chuck, that's a lot of UOAs. Any reason why you never toyed around with the OCI after all these tests? Thanks for the side-by-side of the EP and SS Mobil 1 though; if I ever end up with a 2003 Ford 4.0L SOHC V-6, I'll remember not to bother with the "extended performance" variety. [Cheers!]

Mobil Clean 5000 5W-30 looks like a better choice with such a short OCI. Why don't you try something different?

In defense of chucky, he's sticking with 5000 oci to maintain his 100k extended warranty. Since he wants the best syn money can buy, he's going with the Mobil 1 EP; However, he's changing his oil every 4-6 weeks. 70k miles accumulated in 2.5 years.

First, thanks for all the replies! [Smile] Al- I know what your saying...but, it's like $18 something for regular Mobil-1, and like $23 something for Mobil-1 EP...like a $5 difference. Over 5,000 miles, that's a $1 per 1,000 miles. With the higher additives and what I think may be stronger or at least longer lasting detergents, that's really not that much more when you think about it. Highroller- I guess anything's possible. I can't really say the engine is really that bad...it's just that the FP60 within about 1 tankful quieted down the injectors or whatever they were and made the engine sound nice and smooth at higher cruising RPM's. Just really worth it if nothing else for the sound reduction. Idle seems to be better also... TooSlick- Yeah, when you look at this stuff and compare it to the old Mobil-1 SL, it actually doesn't even look as good - it's almost resembling the "old" Mobil-1 SM. Makes one wonder what the current Mobil-1 SM looks like? The Critic- Not that my wear rates skyrocketed or anything....but, I would have preferred the higher additive levels. Oh well.... johnsmith- Yeah, it's a lot! [Smile] I got tired though of people running one UOA and pronouncing something concrete about it with no trend. I think it's safe to say that I had a pretty good trend going. That is, until I changed my driving habits so much recently. I wish I could have stayed down there in St. Louis area for another year...we'd have probably a couple of German Castrol UOA's, and probably even a couple of Redline UOA's. Pity, I think it would really have been interesting. As far as regular Mobil-1 vs. Mobil-1 EP, IMHO - as I wrote to Al above - you mine as well get the EP...what's $5? Steve S- I know...sure wish I could extend it...but this extended warranty lets me only extend out to 5,000 miles. So, until 5 years or 100,000 miles - whichever occurs first - I'm stuck on this OCI, whether I like it or not. Bobert- As far as OCI, I need to stay with warranty. As far as oil selection, I'm keeping the truck until the body disappears, the drivetrain completely goes, or I win a ton of money. I figured the best OTC synthetic I could get would lead me to the least amount of oil related problems. Hopefully, I'm right. Cutehumor- Yep, you've basically got it right! It's somewhere around there...but, since my driving habits have changed now, it's going to be LOTS longer until my next oil change. The results from that OCI won't be really comparable IMHO to the ones above. [Frown] Chuck
