Rando, I have a '86 4runner, 22re, 148K mi. I started using synthetic at 145K mi went I moved to the desert (using synthetic mostly due to the extreme heat). Prior oil was dino 10w40 changed every 3K miles. I replaced the t-chain at 125K miles in Mar '02, also replaced oil/water pump, plugs/distrib. cap & rotor/wires, exhaust valve guides, valve seals, head gasket, cam (using TRD cam now) & rocker arms. Engine was burning about 1 qt every 3K mi before. After, I'd say 1/2 qt. I changed to Delvac 1 5w40 at 145K mi...no leaks, consumption is about the same 1/2 qt. After 3K mi (oil was dark), just put in Rotella T synthetic 5w40. Car seemed to start a tad better w/ the D1 (maybe the starter contacts are wearing out?), so after I use up my last gallon of Rotella T 5w40, I plan to switch back to D1 (local supplier has it for $90.23/4 gallons). Car ran great w/ D1, got 24mpg w/ AC going from Tucson to Phoenix and back in late June.
