Went to the Wallyworld today to get the oil changed in the Trooper(don't smack me please). Had intended to go with the Syntec 10w-40 (oil consumption issues, at least to me) since they say they cannot get 5w-40 Mobil 1. Had them put on a SuperTech filter instead of the OrangeDeathCan.

Well I wanted to watch them change the oil (imagine that!!). The service man had to ask again what oil to use (a scary thought) so I took a chance and told them to use 4qts Mobil 1 10w-30 and 1 qt Mobil 1 15w-50.

Now what roughly would the operating viscosity be at say 100c? I know a few on here have used a similar mixture, what were your results? My goal was to get to a thick 30wt or a thin 40wt. Would it be better to use 2 qts 15w-50 to 3 10w-30? Are there any VOA's on these two oils? I am having no luck searching for any.

Thanks!!

Ncirish. I also mixed Mobil 1
when I changed the oil last month
in my BMW. I wen't with a 4:2 mix
(4 L 10w30/2 L 15w50). The vicosity
of 10w30 @ 100 C is 10. The viscosity
of 15w50 @ 100 C is 17.4 cSt. Your
mix of 4:1 should give you a viscosity
of around 11.4 cSt. A 3:2 mix would
of given you a viscosity of 12.9 cSt
at 100 C.

Hmmm....maybe I should have went with a 3:2 ratio of 10-30 to 15-50. Just wanted a bit thicker oil in the motor to help with the usage.

Maybe the 0-40 would work since I cant get the 5-40 M1 here.

Has anyone used the Rotella T Syn 5-40 in a DOHC engine?

I was wondering about that. Can you use percentage of mix and just figure the resulting viscosity? In other words would 3 quarts of 10w/30 and 3 quarts of 15w/50 give you a 100c viscosity of 13.7?

Are there any VOA's or UOA's on a home-brew such as this? It seems that this type of brewing or blending would be quite popular given the distribution of the 5-30, 10-30, and 15-50 weights almost everywhere.

For thought, would a 3:2 of 5-30 & 15-50 be even better?

Richin Chicago. The new viscosity will
be close to the average. Mobil Tech.
people even said that in an e-mail
response to that same question. It may
be off a little but who cares. I did it
because here in Canada, Mobil 1 0w40 is
not available for my BMW. I think Mobil
is better than the BMW (Castrol) 5w30.

Thanks! I'll keep blending! I know one thing for sure. My blend of 4 quarts 10w/30 and 2 1/2 quarts 15w/30 sure quiets down the valve train!
