How does the 0w30 Fuel Efficient Mobil 1 oil compare to the Amsoil SSO 0w30? Just wondering because it is pretty inexpensive at Walmart. I know that the Amsoil 0w30 has proven to be pretty good. Just curious how the two compare?

I have no way of proving it, but I would suspect that Amsoil SSO is "better" depending on your application and intentions. That being said, I just picked up Mobil1 0W-30 for winter at Autozone (to use the rebate). But I drive an older, pedestrian commuter that I rack up a ton of miles on and just don't feel like changing the oil all that often in the Winter here.

If I had something new or that I was going to keep, I'd consider Amsoil...

Two COMPLETELY different oils.

The SSO is designed to last MUCH longer, and has a MUCH heavier add-pack and higher TBN.

It is also more expensive.

The M1 will not last the same duration in the same application, but otherwise appears to be a good oil. I have no personal experience with it, since this grade is not yet available in Canada.

I think I am going to stick to the Amsoil for my Eclipse. It is my summer season car, so I pretty much drive it from aprilish through the fall until it gets to cold and [censored] here in Michigan. This season I have about 4k on it, and the oil report looked pretty perfect.

I was just curious because it is expensive, but that car is also my baby/toy and I drive it pretty hard, so I want to make sure I use the best stuff with it. But I was thinking I might be able to save a few bucks, but who knows.

I did put the Mobil 0w30 in the Gf's car though, so we will see how it works out for her.

I thought I had read somewhere..probly on BITOG that this M1 viscosity was to be available spring/summer of 09

Amsoil is for going long drains or duration, only - IMO...

I e-mailed them back in January, and got the response that:

We apologize for the time that it has taken to reply.

We have been advised that the Mobil1 AFE 0W20 and 0W30 is in the product plan for June 2009.

Thank you for contacting Imperial Oil.

So they should be on shelves by now....unless they are availiable, and no stores are ordering them b/c they don't think they will sell.....Ct and WM alrady have a LOT of M1 products taking up shelf space....

I never heard it had a significant amount of esters. I did hear it uses a top of the line PAO. Spectrasyn Ultra.

It does probably use esters and is a better oil then M1 0w-30.

It says Mobil is the largest producer of PAO in the world. Who makes esters?

Exxon-Mobil happens to be the world's largest manufacturer of both, as well as many other chemicals.

Overk1ll,
I find it strange that some do not think M1 oils have PAO or esters in their products since they are the largest producer of these base oils.
