Exceeding industry standards and the major leading builder requirements is the cornerstone of the performance reserve that lets Mobil 1 0W-40 keep performing well after conventional oils cannot. Mobil 1 0W-40 provides the widest range of protection -- providing the extreme cold start protection of an 0W grade and the high temperature protection of an SAE 40 grade.

I don't remember what the old what looked like. Flash Point is still 457F HT/HS - 3.6

A HT/HS of 3.6 Cp out of a 14.3 Centistoke, SAE 40wt oil?

Be still my beating heart...

"AFL"/5w-40: 14.5 Cst @ 100C...HT/HS of 4.2 Cp at 150C and a Noack of 5.5%.

Which do you think will be significantly more shear stable and provide better valve train protection?

Hint: It's a rhetorical question Buster....

Ted, the AFL is a top notch oil and yes the specs are better for Noak and HT/HS (apples to apples would be Delvac 1 vs AFL).

For a 5w-40, AFL would be my choice.

I sound like a Mobil spokesperson, but when you consider global availablity, OEM/API approvals and what a true synthetic really is, Mobil 1 is the best oil on the market. No doubt in my mind.

My point was when factoring in the following:

1.Cost
2.Availablity
3.Peformance across the board (15k mile capable)
4.True synthetic
5.OEM/API approvals

Mobil 1 is the best oil on the market. You can pick any criteria to judge what the "best" is, but RL @ $9qt doesn't quite make it for me. It's also a pain to find.

On a one to one performance basis, Mobil 1 is not the best oil.

I don't recall that it met GF-3, but a little research and.....

However - I wouldn't worry to much about it. I believe the "Energy Conserving" standard for API SM was stiffened up a bit, so it doesn't meet the new standard. The "reference" oils may be different, and the requirements are stiffer.

Nope, not worrying about it. I was justing pointing out the difference between the SL and SM verions =)

buster, come on... Mobil 1 is a very good oil. Best requires a more specific solution to an existing application.

Here's some numbers from another 5w-40 synthetic

15.1 Cst @ 100C...HT/HS of 4.6 Cp at 150C and a Noack of 6%

...is it better because of those numer, I don't know? It's an oil that Ted likes, even though he sells Amsoil. It's an oil that Terry Dyson likes, but it's an oil that many of the oil geeks on this forum hate. They know it's junk, even though it has some good numbers. I think we are missing something in these numbers. We should call it the geek scale. And number one on that list has to be GC and last on the list would be Red Line. We can score the rest somewhere in the middle. If CG is a 10 and Red Line is a 0 then buster can place Mobil 1, depending on the Mobil 1 flavor of the month, on the scale, and TooSlick can do the same for Amsoil's flavors, and Roy Howell can argue that Red Line should rate better than a zero. I don't know why the geek scale hasn't been generated before this. We can totally avoid what else is going on in an engine as long as we have our numbers an one uoa, it's the numbers that drive the world around here and the geek scale will guide us to the light.
