Very interested to hear opinions on this.

My 02 Eurovan book recommends 5W-40 or 5W-30. The requirements are VW 502.00 or 500.00 or 501.01. And ACEA A2 or ACEA A3. And API Service SJ.

I just found information on Mobil 1 European Car Formula 0W-40. Even though the grade is different, this oil says it meets the Volkswagen 502.00/505.00,503.01 requirement. It also meets or exceeds the following specifications:
ACEA A3,B3,B4
API SL,SJ,EC,CF
ILSAC GF3

Can I use this stuff? Should I use this stuff? Or is there something else I should use? Currently using Mobil 1 5W-30 Newer Car Formula.

I drive a 02 VW Jetta and the manual says the same thing about oil recommendations. Yes 5W-40 is the preferred grade. 5W-30 can be used if 5W-40 is not available. The oil should meet one or more of the following designations that you listed. Mobil 1 0W-40 would meet all the requirements in the manual including the Energy Conserving ISLAC GF-3. Whereas Mobil 1 5W-30 meets the API SL(exceed SJ) and the Energy conserving ISLAC GF-3. If you read the bottom part of the page it says if 5W-40 or 5W-30 is not available, you can use any oil suitable for your climate meeting the above specifications.

So yes I would choose Mobil 1 0W-40 over 5W-30. Mobil 1 5W-30 is said to be thin side of the 30 weight. I don't know a whole lot about the 2.8 6 cylinder engine. But 5W-40 seems to be the preferred grade for all VW engines. Mobil does make a 5W-40, its labeled at Mobil 1 Truck and SUV. However that oil does not have the VW specs, just the API SL which is fine to use also.

Both Mobil1 0w-40 and Shell Rotella T 5w-40 work great in the 2.8l VR6. I've used both of them with 10k miles OCIs and the engine is still purring at 175k miles.

If you were to look at the discussions on tthe M1 0w-0 over at the VWVortex Forums, you'd find that A LOT of people use it in both the VR6 and 1.8T with great success.

Just remember that the reason it's probably the only 40w oil to have the energy conseving starburst on the front, is because it shears down pretty quick. It will thicken back up but probably after alot of miles. I think the Mobil 1 T&SUV 5w-40 is a better oil for the same price and would easily meet the VW specs if it was tested for them.

I am considering using the M1 0W-40 in my new Volvo S60 2.5T. I will have to bring it to the dealer to get them to use it. One of the local dealers I called uses Castrol GTX. They probably all do around here.

It looks like Volvo dealers are just as dumb as the Audi/VW dealers. I guess we will be reading about sludged up Volvo turbo engines soon.

The VR6 runs really hot. I would use Mobil 1 5W-40 over the 0W-40.

Not in any of my cars, turbo or not!

2001 VW Passat 1.8T: Mobil 1 0W-40 (up to a whopping 4.5 qts. with the new bigger filter), 3 to 3.5K mile OCI.

2003 Dodge Stratus 2.4L: Castrol GTX or Pennzoil 5W-30 dino (winter) / 10W-30 (summer), same OCI as above. No turbo, full 5-qt. sump, but that good old minuscule K-car oil filter.

The 15W-50 also meets ACEA service categories A3, B3, and B4.

If you're interested in getting some viscosity, it's another option.

PepBoys stores around here now carry Valvoline SynPower 5W-40. This one has VWAG approvals.

Also, WallMarts carry Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic 5W-30/10W-30 that meets ACEA A3 and VW specs. And you can always buy GC 0W-30 at AutoZone...
