One more from my 2000 4Runner.

This oil has been in the truck almost a year. It's the same mix as the previous runs with M1R. 6 quarts of the 0W-30 M1R + 1 quart of M1 15W-50EP. That's why the viscosity is a little high. Note also that this is the older formulation of the M1R not the current one.

Previous samples shown on report -

75082 Miles CG 0W-30
84905 Miles M1 0W-30 M1R
95328 Miles M1 0W-30 M1R
110289 Miles Schaeffers 7000 5W-30
120507 Miles M1 0W-30R

I don't have a clue where the lead might be coming from. The anti-seize I used when I changed the plugs around 120K miles?

I'm not too concerned about it in any case.

Johnny, don't spoil the party.

The guy is running a total overkill oil, and getting good results. It must be the oil, so bringing the 'reality' in that a regular SM-synthetic could do just as well, is just, well....well it's un-BITOG, that's what it is!

A full pan of this stuff is waaay over kill and a waist,i add 1 qt to a OC to "boost" SM levels.

Yes. I'll probably get something from Amsoil once I run out of this oil.

The oldest UOA shown in the first post is GC 0W-30.

The 7124 mile run ending at 110,289 miles was Schaeffers 7000 blend 5W-30 SM. It's good but it wouldn't have made 10K miles IMO. Would you have run it another 3K miles with the TBN sitting at 1.8?

Here's a little more 'reality' on the same vehicle. Earlier UOA's with more common oils -

From oldest to newest.

50,161 miles - M1 5W-30
57,742 miles - M1 5W-30
65,119 miles - GC 0W-30

I paid $4 a quart for the M1R and I have enough left for 20K more miles. What's in the engine now + 1 more change.

Anyone think I can find something that will run 10K miles and do as well for the same $4 ?

Clue me in on what to buy

It might have been a nice way to 'extend' my stash a little longer. But at $4 a quart it didn't seem overly wasteful.

Sorry about the incomplete first response. The edit time ran out...

I should probably try something like this next time I change. Mixing 1-3 quarts of the M1R with something else would get me a couple more 10K intervals. I only have 6 quarts left in my stash.

Mobil 1 5w-30 High Miles?

I too wonder if it would make it that far. I wouldn't want to run it to 10K miles right off.

That's why I make the Amsoil comment previously. Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I'd feel comfortable going 10K right away on something like Amsoil ACD or the Series 3000 oils.

The other thing I think might be worth trying is Schaeffers 9000. The 7000 did fine in this engine over the shorter interval I ran it.

I'm just lazy. I want to run whatever choose for 10K intervals and not worry about it.

Nice job jsharp.

These series of Mobil 1R 0W30 UOA's puts to rest some commonly believed myths:

1) That Racing oils can't be used for extended oil change intervals.

2) That Racing oils will poison a catalytic converter in a normal functioning vehicle. (You did't replace a cat did you?)

3) That the shelf life of this original version Mobil 1R 0W30 is a lot longer than we have been told (3-5 years).

All this is good to know because I still have about 30 - 40 quarts of this oil to use up. I told jsharp were to find it at a clearance price of $2/qt. I may even use straight (not blended) it in a Ford Focus (5W20 @7500 miles recommended).

I too hold ACD and HDD in high regard.

You've used Mobil 1 for 30+ years, past formulations had much higher ZDP levels than the current SM/GF-4 formulations, how many catalytic converter failures have you had? How many miles did it take?

I might worry about cat poisoning if my truck used oil. It doesn't. If I fill it with 7 quarts when I change it's slightly over the full mark. It might move down to the full mark in 10K miles. Maybe 1/3 quart of consumption if that.

So what's worse for a cat? 1/3 quart of an oil with 1600 PPM zinc through the cat every 10K miles, or a quart every couple of thousand miles of an SM oil that has 800 PPM?

Manufacturers like SM. It lets them get away with building engines that have poor oil control and still lets the cat live through the emissions warranty.

That doesn't mean the SM oils aren't good. But the zinc reduction wasn't done for our benefit. It was done for theirs
