Hi, all--

my girlfriend and I will be taking a trip to the sierra-nevada mountians in a couple days. We will be experiencing 90-110*F heat during our trip through the valley and steep grades when we reach the mountians.

plain and simply, I want to put the best oil viscocity and brand.

teh car calls for 5W-20 viscocity, so I was thinking of Mobil 1 0W-20. The car has 5,000 miles on it.

I've been using Red Line 5W30 in my Mustang GT (which calls for 5W-20, too). I guess this shows my confidence in the 20 weight oils.

any help ASAP would be very appreciated.

A good synthetic like M1 0w20 is a good choice. You might also want a good synthetic for your tranny, hill-climbing & descending can be torturous for a tranny.

what kinda fluid do these hondas take???

can I get some Red Line D-4 AFT?

what about capacity? how many qrts.?

thx.

sounds good to me. shouldn't have to change it for about 25,000 miles, then.

as far as engine oil viscocity goes, teh consensus is M1 0W20?

Be extremely careful before putting anything but Honda ATF-Z1 in a Honda automatic.

The M1 0w20 should be perfect for a new Honda 4 cyl.

In our new Honda Element 2.4L I-Vtec I've switched to Mobil 1 0W-20 and plan 7K OCI.

I haven't seen the MPG improvment I had hoped for in the first 2 fillups.

If that doesn't improve, then the next oil change will be to Redline 5W-20 at 10K OCI.

My other oil choice, if Mobil 1 0W-20 or Redline 5W-20 aren't available, would be Motordraft 5W-20 at 4.5K OCI.

As much as I like Redline and Mobil 1 , I think that Honda coolant and diff fluisd are best for the Element.

If I had an automatic, I'd sure think twice before changing the Honda fluid. Honda seems to do a great job in specifying good fluids.

I agree with 427. The M1 0W20 should be good for you. Very strongly recommend that you use only Honda ATF. There have been many instances of problems in recent years with Honda transmissions when other ATF was used.

The m1 0w20 will work. So will pennzoil 5w20 and Motorcraft 5w20. I'd leave the tranny alone. With 5k on the clock if it breaks they will give you a free tow and a new tranny

Happy motoring.

110F + Extreme Stress....

Just use the 5W-30 Redline.

Alternatives:

1. 5W-40 Mobil Delvac 1 or Mobil 1 Truck & SUV

2. 0W-30 German Castrol Syntec

3. 10W-30 Mobil 1 + 1 QT 15W-50 Mobil 1

4. Redline 5W-20

I am not sure I trust 5W-20 in the 250F + Oil Temps that could result under the conditions you describe.

Gene

Gene,

I'd agree with you if this was a Honda V6 or a 5 year old Honda with 100K plus miles on it, but the new Honda 4 cyl do extremely well on the M1 0-20w. The Redline 5W-20 would probably do as well to, maybe even better. On the other hand, I'd want a little more protection than what the 5w20 dinos may be able to provide in such extreme conditions.

Just my 2 cents.

Depends on the oil temps. I am running 5W-20 in my Focus right now. However I would not run it pulling the grade coming out of Death Valley in Mid-July unless I was positive that the oil temp would stay under 250&#186F.

250&#186F is the make or break point when it comes to 5W-20 in my opinion.

Delvac 1 5W-40 would allow him to go up to 300&#186F+ on oil temp.

If already has 5W-30 Redline on-hand I see no reason not to use it under these conditions.

I'm not a big fan of 20 weight oils but it seems like people forget a couple of things:

1) Mobil 1 0w-20 is 8.4 cst @ 100c v. Mobil 1 30 weights being about 9.8 @ 100c. Not a whole heck of a lot of difference.

2) The UOA's of engines speced for this engine have so far been very good.

Also, in response to the above comment of 20 weight only being good to 250f, that is pure hogwash. The 20 weight synths will hold up to high temps just as well as a 30, 40 or 50 weight synthetic. The only difference will be they are correspendingly thinner with less film strength. Lets not forget 20 weight oils get subject to the 150c HTHS test. If they fell apart at temps above 250f, they would have a very low or high HTHS.

Care to point me to any that can maintain 5.25 cSt at much over 250&#186F?

Gene

Gene,

On another thread, weren't you quite fond of this post?

From another thread : MolaKule -

What vicosity would be required at 100C (212F), 5.25 cSt SAE 5-20

125C (257F), 5.25 cSt SAE 30

150C (302F) respectively? 5.25 cSt SAE 40

The above are considered minimum viscosities at the temperature specified as per an SAE/GM paper on minimum lubricant films in engines.

Now you're not so fond of it?

Mobil 1 0w20 Vis at 259F = 5.3 cSt

Looks like it's good up to 259F according to your earlier position.

What point? You loved 5w20s in another thread, now your not so found of them?

1. I am not fond of xW-20 if the possibilty exist of exceeding 250&#186F oil temp. IE 110&#186F Ambient + Mountainous Terrain.

2. Cary seemed to allude to the fact that it was good to much higher than 250&#186F.

3. I asked for a example of a xW-20 that is capable of remaining 5.25 cSt or higher at a temperature of much over 250&#186F

4. You responded with a oil that is good to 259&#186F+

5. I do not consider 259&#186F much over 250&#186F.

6. I consider myself neither pro nor anti xW-20. I have just decided where I will draw the line. That line is 250&#186F.

7. I feel for my street use xW-20 is perfectly adequate yet am unlikely to encouter more than a isolated 3 ml 6% grade in temperatures of not over 100&#186F.

8. For Temps over 100&#186F + Mountainous Terrain or Competition I would be using a heavier oil than xW-20. I suspect either xW-30 or xW-40 depending on conditions.

Chill Gene,

I was just messin' with ya'.

However, I do believe that the oil in a new Honda Civic will never exceed 250F since there are only 115HP to heat the 4.2 qts in the engine and the cooling system is obviously brand new and in tip-top shape, even under the cross country trip outlined originally.

Although it is comforting to see someone argue against the usual thoughtless blanket 5w20 recommendation.
